Zeon Investment in Taiwanese Startup to Enhance Lithium-Ion Battery Technology

Zeon's Strategic Investment in Sino Applied Technology

Japan's Zeon Corporation, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has made a significant investment in the Taiwanese startup Sino Applied Technology Co., Ltd. (SiAT), specializing in conductive paste for next-generation lithium-ion batteries using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). This investment, made in August 2023, follows a preliminary agreement signed in May 2025. Through this partnership, Zeon aims to support SiAT in enhancing its production capabilities of SWCNT-based conductive paste and bolster marketing efforts, ultimately advancing the application of SWCNT technology in batteries.

The Investment Details

Zeon has taken the lead in a Series C funding round, which amounts to an impressive $22 million. The strategic partnership includes the appointment of a board member from Zeon to aid SiAT in expanding its production and sales of conductive paste. Specifically, the goal is to increase SiAT's annual production capacity of SWCNT-based conductive paste from 5,000 tons to 25,000 tons by 2030, a five-fold increase. The collaboration also involves joint marketing activities between Zeon and SiAT to achieve greater market penetration for their products.

Advantages of SWCNT-Based Conductive Paste

The conductive paste developed using SWCNT stands out from traditional conductive agents, like carbon black and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, due to its exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and chemical stability. As the demand for advanced lithium-ion batteries increases, the importance of SWCNT as a material is becoming more pronounced. It significantly enhances energy density and cycle life, making it a sought-after component in various applications—from electric vehicles and drones to eVTOL aircraft, AI server BBU, renewable energy ESS, and industrial automation robotics.

Zeon has been pioneering in the field, having become the first in the world to mass-produce SWCNT using its unique 'super-growth' technique in 2015. The SWCNT produced under the "ZEONANO®" brand is characterized by high purity, high specific surface area, and high aspect ratio. Meanwhile, SiAT has over 20 years of expertise in developing nano materials for batteries, employing proprietary technology to create stable conductive paste by uniformly dispersing SWCNT.

Market Validation and Future Prospects

The conductive paste developed by SiAT utilizing Zeon’s ZEONANO® has garnered significant interest from numerous battery manufacturers, with ongoing evaluations confirming improvements in energy output and cycle life. The partnership aims not only to expand production capabilities in Japan but also to further penetrate the market for carbon nanotube products.

The potential applications of SWCNT-enhanced lithium-ion batteries are vast and promising. As industries move towards more efficient and high-performance energy storage solutions, the collaboration between Zeon and SiAT might be pivotal for the future of battery technology. Together, they are poised to lead advancements that will cater to the high demands of modern energy solutions and contribute to the sustainable energy ecosystem.
