Vietnam's Commitment to Sustainable Aviation Fuel at International Summit

On May 6-8, 2026, Vietnam hosted the first international summit dedicated to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Da Nang. The event, organized by the Asia SAF Association (ASAFA), highlighted the country's ambition to become a prominent player in the SAF sector. This pivotal summit brought together approximately 70 leaders from various organizations, including high-ranking officials from vital ministries and representatives from airlines, fuel producers, and technology providers.

The opening ceremony was graced by Mr. Ho Quang Buu, the Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee, who emphasized Vietnam's strategic importance in the region and its potential to lead in sustainable practices. During the summit, two significant memoranda of understanding (MOUs) were signed, indicating Vietnam's commitment to establishing a robust SAF ecosystem.

The first MOU was signed with the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition, and Industry Promotion (IGIP), which operates under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This agreement maps out a strategic framework aimed at enhancing SAF capabilities, facilitating technical knowledge transfer, and supporting policy development. The second MOU, established with the Da Nang Innovation Startup Support Center (DISSC), positions Da Nang as a hub for SAF innovation. Fabrice Espinosa, the founder and CEO of ASAFA, expressed his optimism about Vietnam's potential. He stated, "Vietnam possesses the fundamental elements required to establish a competitive SAF ecosystem. The real question is not whether SAF will expand, but where and who will take the lead." This sentiment resonates with the broader goals of ASAFA, which has emerged as a key voice for promoting SAF within the Asia-Pacific region since its inception in 2024. The organization comprises 44 members from 17 countries, actively shaping SAF policy within various Asian governments.

Throughout the summit, discussions centered on enhancing SAF adoption through government incentives and collaborative efforts amongst industry stakeholders. According to reports, ASAFA has advocated for the purchase of SAF products and certifications while also producing the first APAC SAF Outlook, outlining current trends and future projections in the sustainable aviation industry.

The IPS Vietnam 2026 is the first of three summits organized by ASAFA in 2026, with future events planned in Thailand and Malaysia later in the year. In addition to the summits, ASAFA is committed to releasing three major publications and launching a market structure committee aimed at harmonizing regional standards.

Moreover, in September, ASAFA plans to host its inaugural session of the International Professional Training Academy for SAF. This initiative strives to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to champion SAF adoption in their respective countries, further contributing to the global fight against climate change.
