NordVPN Unveils Global Spam SMS Protection for Android Users
In an effort to enhance user safety, NordVPN has officially rolled out its spam SMS protection feature for Android users across the globe. This innovative tool focuses on identifying and blocking fraudulent text messages before they can pose a threat. The feature is seamlessly integrated within NordVPN's app, sitting alongside its existing spam call and SMS protection capabilities.
Addressing the Growing Threat of Text Scams
According to the
2025 Global State of Scams report by GASA, text messages and SMS rank as the second most used channel by scammers. Alarmingly, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that losses from text message scams in the U.S. are projected to reach
$639 million by 2025—a
36% increase from the previous year. Domininkas Virbickas, NordVPN’s Product Director, stated, “Text messages have long been one of the easiest methods for scammers to reach large numbers of people. The numbers show that this problem is growing increasingly serious. Just receiving a message, reading its content, or tapping a link can lead to falling victim to scams. Our spam SMS protection aims to cut that chain before it starts.”
How the Spam SMS Protection Works
NordVPN’s spam SMS protection system automatically screens incoming text messages from unknown senders. It evaluates the safety of these messages based on factors such as phone number reputation, URL analysis, and content classification. If a message is deemed malicious or suspicious, users receive an immediate push notification detailing the type of threat and recommended actions. Users can view flagged messages in a secure browsing screen within the app, which helps prevent accidental exposure to harmful links.
Additionally, the app provides a dashboard that shows the total number of detected messages and their categories over time, allowing users to visually understand the effectiveness of the protective feature.
This spam SMS protection is integrated with NordVPN’s existing spam call protection, enabling users to manage both scam calls and malicious text messages in one place. Importantly, NordVPN does not store the content of calls or SMS messages, ensuring user privacy is upheld throughout the process.
Introducing Prompt Guard for Enhanced Security
In conjunction with the new SMS protection feature, NordVPN has also announced
Prompt Guard, a new browser extension developed in collaboration with the NordLabs cyber security expert team. This tool aims to prevent the accidental sharing of sensitive information with AI tools. Prompt Guard is available as an extension for Chrome and Edge, and can be installed in developer mode from NordVPN's GitHub repository.
The extension functions by monitoring prompts and uploaded files before they are sent to corresponding AI platforms, ensuring that no sensitive information, such as passwords, API keys, credit card numbers, or even personal identification numbers, is inadvertently shared. If such information is detected, users receive a warning, or the transmission may be entirely blocked. Notably, all detection processes are executed locally on the user’s device, meaning no prompt or file content is sent to external servers.
Users can also customize the tool by adding their unique keywords, making it adaptable to various AI platforms beyond the default ones supported.
