Florida Cancer Specialists Make Strides in Breast and Pancreatic Cancer Treatments with Recent FDA Approvals

Florida Cancer Specialists Makes Significant Progress in Cancer Treatments

Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) has recently celebrated its important involvement in the development of two newly FDA-approved therapies that promise to greatly enhance treatment options for patients battling advanced breast and pancreatic cancers. This achievement underscores FCS's long-standing dedication to advancing oncology research while broadening patient access to critical clinical trials.

FCS President and Managing Physician, Dr. Lucio N. Gordan, eloquently remarked on the importance of these approvals, stating, "These approvals follow years of clinical research with FCS participation and highlight the vital role of clinical trials in translating scientific discoveries into meaningful treatment advances for patients."

The FDA has granted accelerated approval for camizestrant in combination with a CDK4/6 inhibitor, aimed at specific adult patients suffering from hormone receptor-positive (HR-positive), HER2-negative breast cancer. This is particularly significant for cases where tumors develop an ESR1 mutation during treatment, making some breast cancers resistant to conventional hormone therapy. Camizestrant is a groundbreaking oral selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) that inhibits estrogen signaling, while CDK4/6 inhibitors play a crucial role in curbing the growth and division of cancer cells. Together, this combination not only offers a new therapeutic avenue but also provides a robust approach to overcoming treatment resistance.

The initial Phase 1 dose-escalation study of camizestrant was conducted back in 2019 at the FCS Sarasota Drug Development Unit (DDU), greatly aiding in the early clinical development of the drug. Following this, FCS was also involved in Phase 3 trials that demonstrated promising results. Patients who transitioned to camizestrant reportedly exhibited a median progression-free survival nearly double that of patients within the control group.

Moreover, the FDA has also approved daraxonrasib, a targeted therapy aimed at adult patients diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer. This approval marks a significant breakthrough for a condition that has historically faced a lack of treatment alternatives and poor survival rates. FCS's contribution to daraxonrasib’s development involved active participation in early-phase clinical trials, generating essential data to assess the medication's safety and viability, ultimately informing subsequent studies that aided in securing FDA approval. In pivotal trials linked to this approval, patients treated with daraxonrasib demonstrated a median overall survival of 13.2 months, a significant contrast to the 6.7 months for those receiving conventional chemotherapy.

FCS Medical Director of Drug Development, Dr. Manish R. Patel, emphasized the importance of these two targeted therapies, stating, "These targeted therapies add to the growing list of FDA-approved drugs that began as Phase 1 or first-in-human clinical trials at our drug development units and are helping provide new options for patients with many forms of cancer and blood disorders."

Over the past decade, a notable majority of new cancer treatments approved in the U.S. have been examined in clinical trials with FCS's involvement. Dr. Amanda Olson, FCS Medical Director of Late-Phase Clinical Research, further stressed the relevance of these approvals by stating, "These approvals are crucial examples of how research can help expand treatment avenues for patients." She also noted FCS's active engagement in ongoing studies that explore additional applications for both approved and investigational therapies across pancreatic and breast cancers as well as other tumor types.

FCS, recognized as one of the leading community oncology research programs in the country, continues to provide patients access to innovative clinical trials. This commitment helps transition the next wave of cancer therapies from research environments to routine clinical practices. By collaborating with Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI)—one of the foremost oncology research organizations conducting community-based clinical trials—and Paradigm, Inc., FCS offers convenient access to clinical trials at nearly 30 locations across Florida, including early-phase studies at Drug Development Units located in Sarasota and Central Florida.

Kim Vigal, MPH, FCS Vice President of Clinical Research, expressed pride in the organization's accomplishments, stating, "From first-in-human studies to later-phase clinical trials, FCS is proud to help advance promising therapies that may improve outcomes and expand treatment options for patients today and in the future."
