Türk Telekom and ZTE Achieve World's First Live 5G Optical Network Test at 1.6 Tbps

Türk Telekom and ZTE Achieve Groundbreaking 5G Network Milestone

In a significant breakthrough, Türk Telekom, alongside ZTE, has successfully completed the world's first live test of a fully integrated C+L band optical network, demonstrating an impressive capacity of 1.6 Tbps. Conducted in Istanbul, this trial not only marks a milestone in telecommunications but also paves the way for advanced, intelligent optical networks in Turkey and beyond.

The need for increased data traffic capacity has become evident in today's hyper-connected world. Recognizing this demand, the joint team conducted a real-time transcontinental network traffic test using the newly developed C+L band solution. The unique capability of this network allows seamless switching between the C and L bands without the need for any physical changes to the existing infrastructure. This innovative approach optimizes the existing fiber optic infrastructure, ensuring efficient use of the optical spectrum.

The trial revealed a striking advancement in network architecture, making it highly flexible and optimized for high-capacity needs. With the rising demand for high-speed connectivity, this development supports ultra-broadband applications and enhances digital economy growth not only in Turkey but across the Eurasian region.

Furthermore, the test introduced an intelligent network management system that utilizes optical holographic technology for functions such as detection, provisioning, diagnostics, and optimization. By delivering full visibility and control over the network infrastructure, this system significantly enhances the management and operational efficiency of the network.

Ebubekir Şahin, the CEO of Türk Telekom, emphasized the importance of this trial, stating, "This revolutionary experiment conducted with ZTE is a significant step forward in establishing Turkey's advanced optical transmission infrastructure. We have demonstrated the feasibility of rapidly increasing capacity where needed without replacing the entire network, effectively setting a new world record."

Ling Zhi, Vice President of ZTE, added, "This successful trial proves that ZTE’s advanced optical transmission and network management solutions can be effectively applied in critical infrastructures like those in Turkey. Our enhanced capacity, simplified hardware architecture, and autonomous operations lay the foundation for next-generation optical networks that drive the digital transformation of the nation."

The implications of this achievement stretch far beyond mere technical accomplishment. With growing global reliance on robust digital communications networks, the integration of such capabilities is crucial for future-proofing digital economies and keeping pace with rapid technological advancements.

Looking ahead, Türk Telekom aims to leverage the findings of this trial to introduce a sustainable, cost-effective infrastructure model capable of addressing the expanding data traffic needs, ensuring high-speed connectivity for all users.

As the telecommunications landscape evolves, initiatives like this are critical to fostering innovation and securing a competitive edge in a global market. Türk Telekom and ZTE promise to continue exploring ways to enhance network capabilities, ensuring they meet the fast-paced demands of our digital future.
