EMU Board of Regents Announce Lowest Tuition Increase in Over Ten Years

Eastern Michigan University's Tuition Increase and Fee Restructure

On June 25, 2026, the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Board of Regents convened to discuss important financial decisions impacting students’ educational journey. In a move that marks a significant milestone in higher education affordability, the board approved a 2.5% increase in undergraduate tuition for the Academic Year 2026-27. This increase stands as the lowest of its kind reported among public universities in Michigan and is the smallest annual increase the university has seen in over a decade.

A Transparent and Simplified Fee Structure

Alongside the tuition increase, the Board also introduced a new fee structure aimed at improving clarity and transparency for students and their families. The new Student Services Fee, amounting to $225 per semester, replaces multiple individual fees previously charged. This remarkable change is designed to simplify the financial landscape for students and eliminate confusion regarding their overall educational costs.

The previously existing fees that will be eliminated include the Registration fee, New Student fee, Rec/IM Fee, and the Hybrid Course fee, all effective from Spring 2027. This streamlining not only alleviates financial burdens but also provides students with a straightforward view of their expenses.

Breakdown of Approved Tuition and Fees

The newly approved tuition and fees entail:
  • - Undergraduate Tuition: A 2.5% increase.
  • - Graduate, Doctoral, Signature, and Differential Tuition: A 3.0% increase.
  • - Student Services Fee: A consolidated fee of $225 per semester, helping students understand their total costs at a glance.

In addition to this, students will benefit from the elimination of several fees:
  • - UG Admission Fee: $110
  • - New Student Fee: $200
  • - Registration Fee: $60 per semester
  • - Rec/IM Fee: $80 per semester
  • - Hybrid Course Fee: $60 per credit hour (starting Spring 2027)

This consolidated fee framework will support essential services such as access to the Rec/IM, counseling, well-being initiatives, and career services. It signals EMU's commitment to ensuring that students are not overwhelmed by numerous separate charges, providing instead a predictable cost structure that students and families can plan around.

Commitment to Affordability

Eastern Michigan University is among the few institutions in the state that are making conscious efforts to keep tuition increases minimal. While many colleges across Michigan are anticipating tuition hikes as high as 4% for the upcoming academic year, EMU’s increase of 2.5% underscores its dedication to affordability and fiscal responsibility.

President Brendan Kelly stated, “Today’s action is a reflection of our commitment to clarity, transparency, and student success. By simplifying our fee structure and maintaining the lowest tuition increases in the state among universities that have reported thus far, we are working to ensure that students and families view their educational investments as manageable and predictable.”

Aligning with State Budget Standards

The board authorized EMU to make potential adjustments to the new tuition structure to comply with the state’s tuition restraint cap, ensuring that the university remains within financial guidelines established by the state of Michigan.

As EMU continues to foster an educational environment grounded in affordability and transparency, the recent decisions by the Board of Regents represent a broader commitment to supporting students. The strategic overhaul of tuition and fees is a progressive step towards enhancing the overall educational experience at Eastern Michigan University.
