CATL Unveils World’s First TENER-Stack Energy Storage System with 9 MWh Capacity
CATL Unveils TENER Stack Energy Storage Solution
In a groundbreaking announcement made at ees Europe 2025, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited) has revealed the TENER Stack, the world’s first mass-produced energy storage system boasting a significant capacity of 9 MWh. This innovative system aims to meet the rapidly growing global energy needs, driven by advancements in AI-operated data centers and industrial electrification.
The TENER Stack is designed to provide utilities, developers, and industrial users with a way to maximize economic benefits from every square meter of installation. "CATL has always been a pioneer of the energy transition," said Amanda Xu, the Technical Head for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and President of ESS Europe at CATL. "To meet the expectations of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that offers high energy density, compactness, and flexible deployment, we developed the latest CATL TENER energy storage solution. It breaks the boundaries of power capacity and product transportation, allowing for unprecedented improvements in space utilization, energy efficiency, and cost."
Breaking New Ground in Capacity and Compatibility
The TENER Stack incorporates high-density CATL cells along with a five-year zero-degradation technology. This results in a 45% improvement in volumetric usage and a 50% increase in projected energy density compared to conventional 20-foot container systems. With an internal capacity of up to 9 MWh, the system can charge up to 150 electric vehicles or power an average German household for six years.
To enhance compatibility and system efficiency, the TENER Stack supports both centralized and string Power Conversion System (PCS) architectures. This dual technology pathway ensures seamless integration with traditional AC-side equipment and a wider range of grid applications. The space efficiency of the TENER Stack delivers significant economic benefits, requiring nearly a third fewer containers for 800 MWh of storage capacity compared to traditional 6 MWh systems. This reduces the number of PCS units and the hidden costs associated with system oversizing while boosting area efficiency by 40%. Overall, developers can anticipate a cost optimization of up to 20% when constructing stations.
Hassle-Free Transportation
CATL has addressed the logistical challenges associated with transporting containers that exceed the 36-ton weight limit enforced in many countries. Their solution is the innovative “two-in-one” design, where each half-height unit is meticulously controlled to not exceed the weight limit, ensuring 99% compliance with transport regulations in global markets.
This creative modular design allows for standard shipping methods, including standard container spreaders and liners, which can reduce wait times and special transport costs by up to 35%. With its lower center of gravity and adaptability for height-restricted routes, TENER Stack can easily navigate unique transport scenarios such as bridges and rural areas, further showcasing the advantages of its innovative construction.
Enhanced Safety Standards and Thermal Management
As fire safety becomes increasingly paramount, TENER Stack leverages CATL’s robust lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, renowned for its inherent thermal stability. Enhanced gas sensors now boast 40% higher sensitivity, activating suppression systems 35% faster than previous generations. A new three-layer insulation improves fire resistance to two hours, and the system satisfies IEEE693 standards for seismic impacts, withstanding earthquakes of up to magnitude 9 and Category 5 hurricanes.
Additionally, a Thermal Management System (TMS) design minimizes heat dissipation, reducing land and maintenance costs while maintaining a noise level of 65 dB(A) at a one-meter distance, making it ideally suited for urban settings.
More Than Just Batteries
By the end of November 2024, CATL's ESS products have been implemented in over 1,700 projects worldwide, accommodating diverse climates and operational environments. In response to evolving customer needs, CATL introduced TENER—a compact energy storage system with a capacity of 20 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) and a five-year guarantee against performance degradation—along with TENER FLEX, a flexible rack storage system.
The TENER Stack builds upon the proven performance of the TENER and TENER FLEX series, merging the benefits of its predecessors with enhanced capacity and transportability. CATL aims to support global partners in accelerating the energy transition, providing more energy in less space securely and sustainably. "TENER Stack is massive, flexible, reliable, and quiet. We deliver not just an energy storage product but a solution for energy access that can be deployed globally," outlined Hank Zhao, Technical Director of ESS Europe at CATL, emphasizing that 9 MWh is just the beginning of energy capacity limits. Every advancement in energy density will unleash greater energy value in less space in the future.
