ABEC Expands Process Science Team to Enhance Bioprocess Optimization Capabilities

ABEC Strengthens Its Process Science Group

ABEC, the world leader in bioprocess engineering solutions, has recently announced an expansion of its Process Sciences group. This strategic move is poised to enhance their capabilities significantly in aiding biopharmaceutical manufacturers to accelerate development, mitigate risks, and boost productivity throughout the bioprocess lifecycle.

The Process Sciences team at ABEC integrates knowledge from chemistry and bioengineering with advanced modeling, experimental testing, and custom equipment design. This comprehensive support is provided to clients from the early stages of development all the way to commercial production. By blending hands-on experimentation with computational tools, ABEC facilitates faster problem-solving, more efficient scale-up, and reliable technology transfer while ensuring product quality and consistency.

A foundational aspect of ABEC's approach is its deep understanding of the processes involved. Engineers analyze and optimize critical parameters like mass transfer, agitation, mixing time, shear, and CO₂ removal to meet specific process goals while avoiding common mixing and scale-up issues. This expertise spans both microbial fermentation and animal cell culture processes, positioning ABEC to deliver tailored solutions across a wide array of biomanufacturing applications.

ABEC’s specialized facilities provide enhanced support for process validation through real-world mixing studies and experiments with living cells or microorganisms at scales ranging from 200 milliliters to 6,000 liters. Such activities are complemented by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and other modeling tools, delivering data that underpins Quality by Design initiatives and process characterization.

Advanced CFD simulations also assist in reducing both development time and costs by minimizing experimental testing and lowering risks associated with scale-up and technology transfer decisions. Rather than adapting processes to standard equipment, ABEC custom designs systems based on defined process requirements.

Scott Pickering, ABEC’s spokesperson, emphasized, "In Process Sciences, we provide our clients with the confidence they need when moving from development to production. By combining modeling, experimental validation, and custom equipment design, we help optimize performance, enhance productivity, and lower uncertainty."
