Major Collaboration for Congo Basin Forests

The World Institute for Conservation and Environment (WICE) has recently partnered with the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC) to embark on a significant initiative aimed at improving forest finance in the crucial Congo Basin. This partnership marks a historic step towards addressing the financial challenges faced by one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.

According to her, despite its ecological importance and capacity to store around 65 gigatons of carbon, the region remains severely underfunded. This new Facility aims to rectify the situation by presenting credible, investment-ready projects that will not only safeguard forested areas but also enhance the livelihoods of the more than 100 million people who depend on these resources, including Indigenous communities.

The Structure of the Facility

Under the framework established by the MOU, WICE is set to provide technical leadership in various domains such as carbon finance, biodiversity, and sustainable forestry. COMIFAC, on the other hand, will lead politically, ensuring ownership and coordination with the member states of its organization. The finance facility will adopt a blended finance approach that encompasses three areas: creating enabling environments, preparing projects for investment, and deploying large-scale capital.
