Parkway Electric & Communications Embraces 100% Employee Ownership Model

Parkway Electric & Communications Transitions to 100% Employee Ownership

In a groundbreaking announcement made during their annual meeting on September 15, Parkway Electric & Communications has taken a significant step forward by adopting a 100% employee ownership model through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This transition marks a new chapter for the company after nearly 24 years under the ownership of the Huizenga Group, which acquired the business in December 2002.

During the meeting held at the Pinnacle Center, an air of excitement filled the room as employees learned they are now the proud new owners of Parkway Electric. Ryan Pate, an Electrical Site Superintendent who has been a part of the company for 28 years, expressed his sentiments on the announcement: “I’ve spent 28 years helping build Parkway, and I’ve always been proud to work here. Hearing that we are becoming owners was something special. It recognizes what our people have contributed to this company and gives all of us an even greater stake in what we build together going forward.”

The decision to implement the ESOP stemmed from a thoughtful evaluation by the Huizenga Group, which considered multiple alternatives, including selling the company to an outside buyer. However, they concluded that granting ownership to employees would best honor the legacy of those who have tirelessly contributed to Parkway's growth and success. J.C. Huizenga, Chairman of the Huizenga Group, stated, “Parkway has always been about its people. They are the ones who built the company, serve our customers and created the value that exists today. We concluded that the best way to honor that legacy was to transition ownership to the employees themselves.”

This strategic move not only ensures Parkway’s independence and preserves its culture but also provides employees with a unique opportunity to share in the company’s future success financially. Doug Mitchell, President of Parkway Electric, highlighted the significance of this transition by saying, “Our customers have trusted Parkway because of the quality of our work and the people who stand behind it. That doesn’t change. They will continue to work with the same team and receive the same commitment to quality, service, and problem-solving they expect from Parkway.”

With the ESOP in place, eligible employees will now possess a tangible financial interest in the company, reinforcing their commitment to delivering quality service and enhancing customer relationships. Mitchell was excited about what this change could mean for Parkway’s employees, customers, and the company's future as a whole.

It is clear that the shift to employee ownership marks not just the culmination of nearly 24 years of prudent stewardship from the Huizenga Group, but it also signals the dawn of a new era wherein those who have driven the company’s success can benefit from their contributions.
