Kobe Suma Sea World Welcomes the Enigmatic Ghost Jellyfish
Kobe Suma Sea World, operated by Granvista Hotel & Resort, is excited to announce the inaugural display of the Ghost Jellyfish starting December 8, 2025. This unique species, scientifically known as
Cyanea nozakii, will be showcased in the newly established exhibit area, Jellyfish Life, located on the second floor of Aqua Live.
Introduction to the Ghost Jellyfish
The Ghost Jellyfish resides along the Pacific coast of Honshu, in the Seto Inland Sea, and around Kyushu. This majestic creature is typically observed from summer to autumn, with umbrella diameters often reaching 30 centimeters, and in rare cases, they can grow to an impressive 50 centimeters. The distinct pale coloration, ranging from white to milky white, combined with their soft body and numerous long tentacles, creates a stunning visual as they drift gracefully through the water.
Successful Breeding and Growth
For the first time, Kobe Suma Sea World has successfully bred Ghost Jellyfish. After collecting male and female specimens last year and keeping them together in a tank, the staff witnessed the spawning process and managed to collect planula larvae. These larvae were nurtured until they grew to approximately 8 centimeters in diameter, allowing the facility to prepare for this special display. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe their ethereal swimming patterns, which are reminiscent of ghostly figures gliding through the water.
Note: The planula larvae refer to the initial form of jellyfish after the fertilized egg has hatched, representing the early stage of their lifecycle.
