NEC and Schneider Electric's Strategic Partnership

On March 4, 2026, NEC Corporation announced a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Schneider Electric, aimed at expanding the introduction of Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions in the Japanese market for utility providers. The collaboration focuses on leveraging Schneider’s EcoStruxure™ ArcFM solution, designed to optimize design, operation, and maintenance processes for power companies and utility service providers.

A Step Towards Efficiency

The ArcFM platform visualizes critical infrastructure data, such as power poles and transformers, on interactive maps. This enhanced visualization makes it easier for utility companies to manage assets and streamline their operations. By employing GIS technologies, the ArcFM solution allows users to intuitively visualize network assets, thereby improving both design and maintenance workflows significantly.

Given Japan's pressing infrastructure challenges and the increasing urgency for modernizing utility management systems, this MoU becomes particularly timely. As utility companies face the dual challenge of aging infrastructure and the adoption of renewable energy sources, the introduction of advanced GIS solutions is seen as a critical development.

Global Adoption and Standards

Schneider’s ArcFM is already in use by more than 500 utility companies worldwide, setting a benchmark for international standards in asset management systems. This global traction highlights the platform's capabilities and aligns with Japan's goals for standardizing asset management across its power grid and safety communications network. The incorporation of ArcFM aims to facilitate real-time data sharing and significantly enhance operational efficiency.

Training and Implementation Goals

As part of this partnership, NEC aims to complete initial training on the ArcFM platform by March 2026, covering essential aspects such as design, editing, and mobile access. The company is on track to become Schneider Electric's certified partner by the end of the fiscal year 2026, thereby underscoring its commitment to technological competency in this field.

After completing the foundational training, NEC plans to undergo further specialized training tailored to the specific functionalities of the ArcFM software, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the system.

Collaborative Future

Moving forward, both companies intend to work closely on proof of concept (PoC) initiatives and solution implementations tailored for Japanese power companies and utility service providers. They also plan to deepen collaboration in other utility sectors, such as gas, and explore new solution models specifically for the Japanese market.
