Hindustan Zinc: A Leader in Innovation and ESG Standards by CIMM's Rohitesh Dhawan

Hindustan Zinc: A Beacon of Innovation and ESG Leadership

On September 16, 2025, Hindustan Zinc Limited, renowned as India's sole integrated zinc producer and the largest globally, had the honor of hosting Mr. Rohitesh Dhawan, the President and CEO of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), at its flagship Sindesar Khurd mine located in Rajasthan. This visit signaled a pivotal moment for Hindustan Zinc, occurring shortly after the company became the first Indian entity to join the ICMM.

A Historic Visit

During Mr. Dhawan’s visit, he was joined by Mr. Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, along with the company’s executive team. Their tour of the Sindesar Khurd mine, which is not only significant for its operational excellence but also stands as the fourth-largest silver mine worldwide, showcased Hindustan Zinc's commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices. The visit allowed Mr. Dhawan to observe firsthand the innovation-driven activities that define Hindustan Zinc, emphasizing cutting-edge technology and environmental management alongside ESG leadership.

In Mr. Dhawan's words: "It was a genuine privilege to witness Hindustan Zinc’s operations and the cutting-edge integration of technology with ESG leadership. The path towards a greener future traverses through India, where its metals and minerals play a crucial role in global energy transitions."

Commitment to Sustainability

Hindustan Zinc has resolutely advanced its 2.0 sustainability program, which is guided by scientific goals aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Recognized as the most sustainable mining and metallurgy company for two consecutive years by SP Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, Hindustan Zinc's drive towards reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity continues to shine.

In the fiscal year 2025, the company managed to reduce its GHG emissions intensity by 15% compared to the 2020 baseline, all while maintaining a steady increase in production. This reflects Hindustan Zinc’s balanced approach to sustainable growth, prioritizing environmental responsibility, technological innovation, and long-term value creation for its stakeholders.

The discussions during the visit also focused on global collaboration, sharing best practices, and promoting responsible mining throughout South Asia. Mr. Dhawan emphasized that responsible world-class mining is well established at Sindesar Khurd, presenting a powerful example of what can be achieved when mining is conducted with principles.

Looking Forward

Hindustan Zinc’s journey is not just about meeting current mining demands; it’s about setting benchmarks in sustainability and innovation. The integrations of advanced technologies within its operations not only enhance productivity but also align with global environmental goals, making it a role model for the industry.

As the world looks towards a sustainable future, Hindustan Zinc continues to play a crucial role, inspiring others in the mining sector with its commitment to innovation and ESG leadership. The path carved by Hindustan Zinc underlines the importance of blending resource extraction with environmental stewardship — a quintessential balance that is paramount for the future of mining globally.

This pivotal visit by Rohitesh Dhawan has not only highlighted the strides made by Hindustan Zinc but also reaffirmed the critical role of mining sectors in the broader narrative of sustainability and responsible corporate governance.
