Costa Rica Showcases Investment Potential at German Trade Fairs

From November 17 to 21, Costa Rica will participate in two significant international trade fairs: COMPAMED and MEDICA in Düsseldorf and Semicon Europa in Munich. This initiative is spearheaded by the Costa Rican Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Trade and Investment (PROCOMER), aimed at highlighting the country's investment opportunities in the health and semiconductor sectors.

The Costa Rican delegation will engage with potential investors from leading companies in these sectors and will also collaborate with other international investment promotion agencies. Laura López, CEO of PROCOMER, emphasized the importance of these events, stating, "Participating in international trade fairs presents an excellent opportunity to approach new investors and explore markets that don't traditionally have a strong presence in Costa Rica. Expanding the investor base is crucial for enhancing the country's resilience and competitiveness, especially in vital sectors like medical devices and semiconductors."

The participation in COMPAMED and MEDICA is focused on reinforcing Costa Rica's position as a hub for medical device manufacturing. Currently, over 95 foreign direct investment companies operate in this sector, developing high-precision processes that comply with international standards. Notably, seven of the world's major medical device companies are present in Costa Rica. In September alone, the medical device sector constituted 48% of the total merchandise exports from Costa Rica, amounting to $8.139 billion.

In parallel, the Costa Rican presence at Semicon Europa, one of the industry's most significant events, aims to underline the country's advanced manufacturing capabilities, assembly, packaging, research and development, as well as electronic design. This initiative is set to strengthen the value chain of this emerging industry in Costa Rica, which currently boasts 14 foreign investment companies.

"Costa Rica has established a strong reputation as a destination for foreign direct investment, and our experience allows us to position ourselves within emerging industries with a value proposition that emphasizes talent, sustainability, and adaptability," Laura López added. "These qualities make us a reliable partner for companies seeking to enhance their competitiveness in an increasingly complex global landscape."

In addition to the events in Germany, PROCOMER recently concluded a promotional tour in Portugal and the Netherlands from November 10 to 14. This initiative aimed to present Costa Rica's value proposition to companies in the business services and digital technology sectors. The agenda included participation in the Web Summit Lisbon 2025, one of the world's most significant technology events, along with meetings with businesses, chambers of commerce, and clusters in Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. This effort is designed to foster new relationships and investment opportunities for Costa Rica.

Europe continues to stand out as a primary source of foreign direct investment for Costa Rica, and in 2025, it ranks as the second most important trading partner, accounting for 21% of trade, reflecting a 17% increase compared to 2024. As Costa Rica embraces these international trade opportunities, the nation aims to solidify its status as a prime destination for global businesses seeking expansion and investment.
