Envision Energy Announces Landmark Energy Storage Deal in South Africa

Envision Energy Secures a Historic Energy Storage Contract in South Africa

In a significant advancement for renewable energy solutions, Envision Energy has successfully entered into a contract with the EDF Group to provide three large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in South Africa. This monumental deal, which boasts a capacity of 257 megawatts (MW) and a staggering 1,028 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage, signifies the largest battery energy storage order ever placed in the country.

The battery systems will support the Oasis 1 cluster of projects within South Africa’s first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). The Oasis Consortium, a partnership between EDF and Mulilo, along with key equity stakeholders Pele Energy Group and Gibb-Crede, will deploy these projects across various power plants located in the Northern Cape Province, specifically the Oasis Aggeneis, Oasis Mookodi, and Oasis Nieuwehoop facilities. Notably, the initiative includes empowering local communities through a 5% ownership stake facilitated by a Community Trust.

As of November 20, 2024, the financial arrangements for the project reached a conclusive phase, paving the way for operations expected to commence by late 2026. Envision Energy is set to deliver its robust suite of AC and DC energy storage technologies, which will effectively bolster South Africa's energy management capabilities. The ensemble of services includes advanced station SCADA and Energy Management Systems (EMS).

The DC design incorporates Envision's state-of-the-art 20-foot energy storage containers, featuring cutting-edge 5 MWh units driven by high-performance 315Ah cells known for their safety and efficiency. Envision Energy has also committed to providing comprehensive operational and maintenance services for a period of 15 years, ensuring long-term reliability and performance of the new systems.

Kane Xu, Senior Vice President at Envision Energy, expressed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration, stating, "Battery storage technology is pivotal for sustainable energy systems, and we are thrilled to contribute our advanced technology to this landmark initiative in South Africa. This project aims to alleviate frequent load management issues within the country’s power grid, enhance grid stability, and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, thus facilitating a vital transition towards sustainable energy sources."

This major investment in battery storage will dramatically transform South Africa's energy infrastructure by alleviating grid congestion and increasing the integration of renewable energy. The new storage facilities will also allow for energy arbitrage and ancillary services, granting the country the leverage to streamline its low-carbon energy transition as it aspires to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

"We are excited to advance this project alongside our partners, Envision Energy and Huadong, known for their expertise in energy storage technologies and their capacity to deliver a dependable and effective system," stated Gregoire de Montgolfier, Director of Projects at EDF Renewables.

As the world’s foremost nuclear operator and a key player in the power sector, EDF Group is intent on expanding its portfolio of renewable energy, setting a target of achieving 60 gigawatts (GW) of net renewable capacity by 2030.

Envision Energy distinguishes itself as a premier provider of innovative energy storage solutions, celebrated for its superior battery technology and rapid deployment capabilities. With full-stack technical offerings and a commitment to in-house research and manufacturing, Envision maintains comprehensive control over its products from inception to deployment, ensuring thorough lifecycle asset management. As of late 2023, the company has established a robust global presence with over 200 BESS projects completed, delivering over 15 GWh while also securing additional ongoing orders exceeding 25 GWh.

Having been recognized as a Tier 1 Global Energy Storage Manufacturer by Bloomberg NEF for three consecutive quarters in 2024, Envision Energy remains a prominent force in the energy storage industry worldwide.
