Beko Expands Its Second-Life Program Across Europe
Beko, a prominent name in the home appliance industry, is making significant strides towards sustainability with the expansion of its Second-Life program, 'Reduce - Refurbish - Recycle', at an industrial level across Europe. This ambitious initiative aims to transform the way home appliances are handled at the end of their life cycles and is a clear testament to Beko's commitment to circular economy principles.
Since 2024, Beko has successfully refurbished over 114,000 devices in specialized centers located in the UK, Italy, and Romania. This program not only conserves resources but also reduces waste while making dependable and affordable appliances accessible to consumers without compromising on performance or safety.
Fatih Özkadı, Beko's Chief Sustainability, Quality, and Customer Care Officer, emphasizes that refurbishment goes beyond simply repairing individual devices. It encompasses a strategic approach to extending product life cycles, minimizing waste, and offering more consumers access to verified, affordable products. Beko's investment in advanced refurbishment centers across Europe serves as a model for demonstrating that circular economy practices can yield both ecological and economic benefits.
Beko’s commitment to customer care ensures that the 'Reduce - Refurbish - Recycle' program directly addresses client needs. Many appliance problems can be effectively resolved through remote support or technician visits, thereby preventing unnecessary returns. For products that are returned, Beko follows a clearly defined process including testing, repairs with original parts, classification, and quality checks before they are refurbished and resold. This creates a closed-loop system, providing value not only for customers but also for the company.
A key component of Beko’s network is the refurbishment center located in Peterborough, UK. Spanning around 5,000 square meters, this center has been operating without landfill waste since 2019 and maintains over 100,000 spare parts while managing 55 different types of packaging. Up to 30% of the refurbished devices undergo additional quality assurance checks before being put back on the market.
Beko is also expanding its refurbishment capabilities beyond the UK. In Carinaro, Italy, the team refurbishes washing, cooking, cooling, dishwashing, and drying devices, offering second-life products at prices ranging from 10% to 30% lower than retail. Furthermore, in Romania, Beko aims to recycle more than 75% of suitable devices, reinforcing the scalability and systematic nature of circular economy efforts.
This initiative aligns with Beko's overarching sustainability strategy, which is closely connected to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It integrates a singular European narrative of circular economy with local adaptability, highlighting Beko's influence in promoting sustainability at a broader level.
