United Airlines Achieves FAA Certification for Groundbreaking Starlink-Equipped Aircraft

United Airlines Secures FAA Certification for Starlink-Equipped Aircraft

In a significant milestone for in-flight connectivity, United Airlines recently announced that it has received FAA certification for its first Boeing 737-800 aircraft equipped with Starlink technology. This groundbreaking step marks a new era in air travel, allowing passengers to experience high-speed Wi-Fi and various entertainment options while flying. The airline's first commercial flight is anticipated to take off from Newark/New York on October 15.

The Journey to Certification

The journey to this FAA certification began less than five months after United Airlines successfully executed its first Starlink-equipped regional flight on an Embraer 175 in May 2025. In less than a year, United forged a partnership with SpaceX, entering into the largest industry agreement of its kind. This collaboration aims to provide complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members on both regional and mainline aircraft in the United fleet.

The FAA's approval follows the amendment of Starlink’s Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the Boeing 737-800, confirming safe and reliable designs, installation, and operation. United completed the installation of the Starlink equipment and is ready to transform the in-air experience for its passengers.

Enhanced Passengers Experience

Passengers who have enjoyed the service on United's regional flights have positively noted their experiences. Initial feedback indicates that around 90% of customers appreciated the ability to stream content via Starlink's high-speed and reliable connection. Grant Milstead, United’s Vice President of Digital Technology, expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "Customers are loving the Starlink experience onboard our regional aircraft. Our first Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft will enhance this experience further for many more passengers."

United Airlines is on track to equip over 16 aircraft models, both regional and mainline, with Starlink technology. The lightweight nature of the Starlink equipment allows for easier installation, requiring less fuel to operate, ultimately improving the efficiency of the aircraft.

Free for MileagePlus Members

The best part for United’s loyal travelers is that access to Starlink’s high-speed Wi-Fi will be free for all MileagePlus® members. With Wi-Fi speeds reaching up to 250 Mbps, travelers can enjoy streaming services, shopping, gaming, and much more during their flight. Membership for MileagePlus® remains free, allowing anyone to sign up and start benefiting from the Starlink experience while traveling.

What Lies Ahead

As United continues to roll out Starlink across its fleet, the airline aims to not only enhance connectivity but redefine in-flight entertainment. By making onboard surfing and streaming seamless, United is setting a new standard in air travel. Furthermore, with the reliable nature of the Starlink system, passengers can expect fewer disruptions and a more enjoyable flight experience.
