Dignity Health Takes the Lead in Sustainability Efforts Across California Hospitals

Dignity Health's Commitment to Sustainability in California

Dignity Health, a part of CommonSpirit Health, is making waves in the healthcare industry by spearheading sustainability initiatives across California. Recognizing the critical connection between environmental health and community well-being, Dignity Health's strategy hinges on its mission of compassion and service.

As one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems in the United States, Dignity Health is setting an exemplary standard in reducing its environmental footprint. Julie Sprengel, President of CommonSpirit Health in California, emphasizes that “the health of our patients is intrinsically linked to the health of our planet.” With a proactive approach, Dignity Health is committed to fostering healthier environments that empower communities and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Major Achievements in Waste Reduction

In 2025, Dignity Health's hospitals across California achieved remarkable milestones in waste reduction and greenhouse gas emission cuts. Their impressive statistics include:
  • - The destruction of over 3,341 tons of paper, saving an estimated 56,797 trees, 23.3 million gallons of water, 10,000 cubic yards of landfill space, and 1.27 million gallons of oil.
  • - Recycling upwards of 814 tons of mixed materials, showcasing their commitment to minimizing waste.
  • - Reprocessing 50 tons of medical devices and recycling 1,380 tons of cardboard.

These efforts exemplify Dignity Health’s ongoing dedication to environmentally sustainable practices that shield both the population and the planet.

Setting Ambitious Goals with CommonSpirit Health

As a member of CommonSpirit Health, Dignity Health aligns its sustainability objectives with the overarching goals of the entire healthcare system. CommonSpirit has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, which involves a 50% reduction in operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This ambitious objective is a progressive step towards encouraging the healthcare sector to address its environmental impact, especially concerning vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by poor air quality and extreme weather events.

Sor Mary Ellen Leciejewski, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at CommonSpirit Health, reinforces this connection by stating, “If you do not have a healthy planet, you cannot have a healthy human being.” This philosophy underscores their mission to enhance the health of all they serve, recognizing that environmental management is a key component of this commitment.

Embracing Local Action for Global Impact

In honor of Earth Day, Dignity Health's hospitals and care centers are participating in a myriad of local initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental awareness. These initiatives include community engagement activities that not only foster sustainability practices but also strengthen ties with local partners, patients, and caregivers.

Dignity Health proudly stands alongside its community partners, working collaboratively to build healthier communities and create a sustainable future throughout California.
