Empowering Education in Kibera, Kenya
Migi Sakata, the co-CEO of Kotatsu Corporation and the representative director of the non-profit organization SHIFT80, has recently been chosen as a recipient of the Amelias Startup Grant for 2025, managed by the Women’s Startup Lab Impact Foundation Japan. This grant, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, aims to support innovative social initiatives, and out of approximately 100 applicants nationwide, only eight were selected based on their social innovation and potential impact.
Recipients of this grant are eligible for up to $15,000 (approximately 2.3 million yen), along with mentorship and skill development support. Migi will receive the grant through Kotatsu Corporation and allocate the entire amount to support the activities of SHIFT80, aiming to create a safer learning environment for children living in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya.
Specific Use of Funds for Educational Support Programs
The funding will directly support SHIFT80’s educational program aimed at fostering school attendance and academic advancement for children in need. The program particularly focuses on middle school students in Kenya’s slums, providing direct assistance through self-help groups for female students and essential educational resources. Additionally, this funding will cover necessary operational expenses, including travel and accommodation for ongoing local activities.
Despite the grant being received by a different entity, Migi has responsibilities in both organizations, ensuring that the allocation of funds aligns directly with SHIFT80’s mission. This systematic approach guarantees that children can continue their education in a secure environment, supported by the funding.
Comments from Representative Director Migi Sakata
Migi Sakata expressed his gratitude and determination: “I am honored to be selected for the Amelias Startup Grant. Through this support, I aim to broaden our activities so that children in difficult situations in Kenya can continue to learn safely and develop the strength to shape their future. Moving forward, we intend to deliver educational opportunities to even more children while establishing sustainable systems. Upholding the idea that ‘We are all Earthlings. Share the little you have,’ we aspire to spread the cycle of sharing worldwide.”
Future Prospects
A results presentation event is scheduled for March 2026 in Tokyo, where the project aims to leverage international networks and insights for further expansion and sustainability to create a lasting social impact.
