In a significant move against ocean plastic pollution, Iron Software has announced its partnership with Seven Clean Seas. This collaboration will fund the deployment and operation of a river barrier in Bang Kachao, Thailand, with the goal of intercepting 200 tonnes of plastic waste before it can enter the Gulf of Thailand. The initiative underscores Iron Software's commitment to human-led solutions, favoring community engagement over purely technological interventions.

Understanding the Ocean Plastic Problem

Statistics reveal that approximately 70% of ocean plastic makes its way into the sea via rivers. In Thailand, the Chao Phraya River serves as one of the key conduits through which plastic waste from inland areas reaches the ocean. Various communities along the river contribute to this issue, as plastic products are omnipresent and often washed away into smaller tributaries. This ultimately leads to a buildup of waste in the main waterway, exacerbating environmental challenges.

Tom Peacock-Mayson, CEO of Seven Clean Seas, highlights a crucial insight: “If you overlay maps of poverty with maps of plastic leakage, you'll see significant overlap.” He emphasizes that the root causes of plastic pollution are tied to fragile economies, making automated technological responses insufficient. Supporting local communities by securing formal employment opportunities is essential for long-term sustainable change.
