Health Net's Investment in Housing Solutions for Angelenos
In a groundbreaking effort to combat homelessness, Health Net, a leading Medi-Cal managed care health plan in California, has pledged a significant $2 million investment to LA Family Housing (LAFH). This funding marks a continuation of their partnership, allowing more than 500 unhoused individuals to secure stable housing and access vital medical and behavioral health services. Health Net’s support is crucial as Los Angeles faces an ongoing housing crisis.
The renewed grant will directly support LAFH's innovative Housing Location program, designed to expedite the process of connecting individuals experiencing homelessness with permanent, affordable housing in Los Angeles County's Service Planning Area (SPA) 2. Last year, this initiative was a resounding success, exceeding targets and demonstrating the effectiveness of both organizations working together to alleviate homelessness.
A Partnership Based on Results
Health Net's decision to reinvest stems from impressive outcomes reported by LAFH. The organization's ambitious target was to secure 250 to 300 units of housing for participants; however, they surpassed this expectation by acquiring 458 units—an achievement of 183% of their goal. Additionally, LAFH strengthened its relationships with landlords, forming partnerships with a total of 190 landlords—146% of what was initially estimated. These metrics showcase the success of the Housing Location program and the growing confidence Health Net has in continuing their support.
Dorothy Seleski, President Medi-Cal for Health Net, emphasized the partnership's value: "With this renewed grant, we're able to create lasting change for so many who need it most. Our collaboration with LA Family Housing reflects our commitment to equity and community-driven solutions. Every dollar invested moves us closer to achieving a future where every person in Los Angeles has a place to call home."
Stories of Hope
For many individuals benefiting from this program, the renewed funding is more than just financial support; it represents renewed hope and opportunity. A Health Net member who previously utilized services shared, "There was a time when I didn't think I'd have my own home again. LA Family Housing's team never gave up on me. Now, I have my own apartment and a second chance to rebuild my life."
These narratives of stability and recovery are a testament to the impactful work being done through this partnership. Beyond merely providing shelter, Health Net and LA Family Housing aim to restore dignity and empower individuals to thrive in their new environments
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, LA Family Housing has ambitious plans to expand its housing portfolio further. The renewed funding will allow for the strengthening of relationships with property owners, aiming to engage 35 additional properties and host numerous housing events throughout the year. The goal is to facilitate the placement of 250 individuals into permanent homes while sharing successful unit-acquisition strategies with other service providers to maximize community impact.
Stephanie Klasky-Gamer, President and CEO of LA Family Housing, stated, "At LA Family Housing, we understand that hope is built one home and one relationship at a time. By collaborating with Health Net and community partners, we're not just providing housing; we’re transforming lives and uplifting people to achieve stability. Our efforts prove that collective action can lead to remarkable changes in our communities."
Health Net’s commitment of over $247 million since 2020 to various community-based organizations, including recent support for housing assistance for seniors, reflects its dedication to making a positive difference. For further insights into Health Net's contributions, visit
