Skanska Secures Contract for Second Avenue Subway Project Phase II in New York
Skanska's New Subway Project in New York
Skanska, a leading construction and development company, has officially signed a deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to carry out Phase II of the Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City. This major infrastructure initiative, which holds a contract value of $1 billion, sees Skanska taking on a significant portion amounting to $498 million (approximately SEK 4.6 billion).
The extensive scope of this project includes vital design and construction tasks required to facilitate a new station at 106th Street. Specific activities will involve creating structural shells for the new station and making structural tie-ins to existing tunnels, which are crucial for minimizing disruption while ensuring seamless integration with the subway network.
Additionally, workers will conduct excavation support along with earthwork activities to ensure stability during the construction process. Installation of roadway decking is planned to maintain current traffic flow, which highlights the project's consideration for existing urban life as it unfolds.
The venture also incorporates building at-grade and below-grade structures to create entrances for the new station. Coupled with this, significant utility support and reconstruction efforts are necessitated due to the urban environment's complexity, making this a critical aspect of the project development.
Phase II builds on the foundation laid in Phase I, where service was successfully extended from 63rd Street to 96th Street. Since its operational launch in 2017, this initial phase has proven essential for commuters and has set the stage for further expansion. Phase II continues this trajectory as the subway line progresses northwards toward 125th Street, greatly enhancing accessibility for residents in Upper Manhattan.
Construction on Phase II is set to begin in May 2026, with the target completion date projected for the third quarter of 2030. This timeline reflects Skanska's commitment to timely delivery and to upholding the standards that New York’s public transport expects.
Officials from Skanska affirm that this project not only boosts local transportation but also underlines their dedication to advancing public infrastructure in metropolitan areas across the U.S. Furthermore, this subway extension aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable transit options and reduce congestion in one of the country’s busiest cities.
As the project progresses, stakeholders and the general public will be keenly watching to see how Skanska and its partners navigate the challenges of urban construction while delivering much-needed subway services to Manhattan. The venture symbolizes a positive step forward in enhancing urban mobility, economic activity, and overall quality of life for New Yorkers.
