About Yasuo Otsuka

Born on July 11, 1931, in Shimane Prefecture, Yasuo Otsuka began his career as an animator in 1956 at Toei Animation (now known as Toei Animation Co., Ltd.). His contributions to the field have been both profound and extensive throughout his lifetime. He was instrumental in training many future talents, including renowned directors Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, and directed his first long-form animation as an animation supervisor in The Adventures of Horus: Prince of the Sun (1968).

After his time at Toei Animation, Otsuka moved to Tokyo Movie (now TMS Entertainment) and continued to lead animation for notable TV series such as Moomin (1969) and Lupin III (1971). His work on films like The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) remains a significant part of his legacy.

In addition to his animation accomplishments, Otsuka is well-regarded as a military vehicle expert. He has published numerous articles, books, and even launched his magazine, MILITARY VEHICLE JOURNAL (MVJ), which he published from 1989 to 2000. His artistic contributions were recognized when he received the Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner’s Award in 2002, making him the first animator to achieve this honor.

He passed away on March 15, 2021, at the age of 89, leaving a legacy that has left an indelible mark on the animation industry.
