On March 21, 2026, the VEX Robotics Japan Cup will take place at Shinagawa Intercity Hall in Tokyo, gathering teams from eight countries, including the United States, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, and Japan. This international robotics competition not only highlights the inventive skills of young minds but also promotes cultural exchange among participants.

A Growing International Event

The VEX Robotics Japan Cup is part of the global VEX Robotics Competition, now in its fifth installment since its inception in 2019. Initially supported by Tokyu Corporation, the event has evolved into a significant platform that invites international teams to compete in Japan. Last year’s edition saw over 200 children from abroad come together, reinforcing the event's role as a bridge across borders and languages through the shared language of robotics.

Engaging Challenges Await

Each participating team in the VEX Robotics Competition is responsible for designing and building their robots to tackle various challenges during the games. The competition emphasizes strategic planning, real-time collaboration with alliance teams, and effective time management—skills that are essential not only in robotics but in life beyond the tournament. The proceedings, from announcements to robot inspections, will be conducted in English, placing participants in a truly international environment.

In addition to the competition outcomes, teams will be evaluated on their Engineering Notebooks, interview performances, and team operations. This approach ensures that not only the final scores but also the developmental process behind each robot is acknowledged, positioning VEX Robotics as a comprehensive engineering education program that many schools adopt worldwide.

The competition will see participation from 58 teams spanning eight countries. This diverse lineup provides a rich opportunity for children to learn from one another while engaging in friendly competition, fostering a unique global perspective on robotics.

Categories for Participant Engagement

The competition will feature both the VEX IQ Robotics Competition (VIQRC) for elementary and middle school students and the VEX V5 Robotics Competition (V5RC) for high school participants. This structure allows students of differing age groups to share experiences and broaden their understanding of STEM education through interactive competition and engagement.
