Allergy and Immunology Leaders Advocate for Workforce Growth and Enhanced Patient Care
A Call to Action in Allergy and Immunology
In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare, leaders from the National Medical Association (NMA) Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAI) Section, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) convened last week. Their joint initiative aims to inspire professionals in the field to strengthen and expand the allergy and immunology specialty workforce across the nation. This effort is particularly crucial as the demand for specialized care increases among the millions affected by allergic and immunological diseases, especially in marginalized and underserved communities.
Dr. Cheryl Walker-McGill, Chair of the NMA AAI Section, emphasized the urgent need for investments in sustainable workforce strategies, highlighting the disproportionate impact of allergic diseases on underserved populations. She stated, "As demand for specialized care grows, we must urgently invest in sustainable workforce strategies—including innovative and transformative technologies—to ensure patients everywhere have timely access to high-quality allergy and immunology care."
The matter will be discussed at the NMA's 2026 Annual Meeting, featuring the Floyd J. Malveaux Symposium. This key event will bring together leading experts to explore solutions aimed at improving access to care and advancing the future of the specialty.
According to Dr. Cherie Zachary, President of ACAAI, the call for collaboration is of utmost importance. "Now is the moment to come together to support healthcare for every individual with allergic and immunologic disease, especially the most vulnerable," she stressed. The commitment to implementing collaborative care models, innovative training pathways, mentorship programs, and community-based approaches is essential to improving health outcomes.
Dr. Carla Davis, President of AAAAI, reinforced the significance of investing in the physician pipeline. "Improving the specialty workforce and access to quality care directly leads to better health for all patients and communities. By investing in diversity, development, and leadership within the workforce, we nurture the expertise needed to provide high-quality care every patient deserves."
Several noteworthy approaches were highlighted by the organizations as critical to achieving improved care:
1. Expanding Training and Mentorship Pipelines: Developing strategies to attract and retain a diverse new generation of allergists and immunologists is vital. Diversity in expertise will ensure that the workforce is representative and capable of addressing varied patient needs.
2. Team-Based Care Models: Supporting collaborative care models that utilize the full skills of physicians, allied health professionals, and community partners is essential. This integrated approach can enhance the reach of healthcare services, enabling better patient outcomes.
3. Leveraging Health-AI: Employing artificial intelligence to extend specialty expertise through telehealth and outreach clinics, while partnering with primary care providers and advocacy groups, makes specialized care more accessible.
4. Leadership Development and Collaboration: Encouraging innovation and the sharing of best practices among institutions and organizations can accelerate the transformation of the specialty.
The united effort of NMA AAI, AAAAI, and ACAAI signifies a commitment to health equity, exceptional care, and ongoing enhancements in clinical outcomes. The organizations encourage allergists and immunologists at all professional levels to engage in workforce development, share successful models, innovate, and collaborate to ensure the specialty can adapt and lead in meeting the needs of millions affected by allergies and immunological diseases.
Through these combined efforts, the allergy and immunology community aims to make strides towards ensuring that every patient receives the specialized care necessary to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
