Advanced Aerial Infrared Technology Enhances Bridge Evaluation in Indiana

Evaluating Indiana's Bridges with Aerial Infrared Thermography

In perspective of maintaining reliable and safe infrastructure, Infrasense, Inc. has embarked on a comprehensive evaluation of bridge decks along various major routes throughout Indiana. Utilizing cutting-edge aerial infrared thermography, the company assessed 227 bridge decks to determine their structural integrity.

The Aerial Evaluation Process

The evaluation involved high-resolution infrared (IR) data captured from a licensed fixed-wing aircraft. This method complies with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, ensuring a safe and systematic approach to survey the structures. The aerial survey technique allowed for the efficient collection of IR and visual images as the plane traversed each bridge, with special arrangements for shorter and longer bridges.

For shorter bridges, a single image typically sufficed, whereas longer spans required the compilation of multiple images into a composite plan-view for thorough analysis.

Advanced Image Processing Techniques

Post-capture, comprehensive image processing techniques were employed to enhance the IR data further. Infrasense's proprietary software utilizes an adaptive histogram equalization method to enhance contrast within the IR images, subsequently aiding in the identification of critical delaminations within the concrete surface. This process is complemented by transverse normalization, which addresses and removes thermal banding effects attributable to structural elements, thereby highlighting any thermal anomalies that correlate with potential underlying issues.

Through this advanced analysis, critical factors such as overlay debonding, rebar-level delamination, and areas needing patching or experiencing spalling have been meticulously documented. The evaluation provides both a quantitative summary and corresponding condition maps for each surveyed bridge, equipping stakeholders with vital information to make informed decisions regarding maintenance and repairs.

Implications for Infrastructure Management

This innovative approach not only streamlines the evaluation process but also significantly enhances the accuracy of identifying potential problems, fostering a proactive stance in infrastructure management. In a state where bridges form crucial links between communities and economic activities, the ability to promptly detect issues ensures safety and extends the lifespan of these essential structures.

As urban and rural infrastructures continue to age, technologies like aerial infrared thermography are imperative to safeguard public safety and bolster maintenance efforts efficiently.

In conclusion, Infrasense’s methodical use of aerial infrared thermography marks a significant innovation in bridge condition evaluations, setting a new standard for how inspections can be conducted across the transportation sector in Indiana and beyond.
