Discovering Boso's National Rail Diesel Heritage
The scenic region of Boso, once known as the kingdom of diesel trains, is now offering an exceptional day trip to explore its rich railway heritage. On December 20, 2025, people can take a specialized tour of preserved National Rail trains across three significant locations in Chiba Prefecture. Organized by JR East View Tourism & Sales, this one-day trip promises an enriching experience for railway enthusiasts and families alike.
Tour Highlights
This unique tour centers around three fascinating stops: the Kih30 Preservation Society, Isumi Railway, and Poppo no Oka. Each location showcases remarkable diesel train models that played crucial roles in the history of rail transport. Participants will travel comfortably in a chartered bus, making it easy to explore the sights.
1.
Isumi Railway - Reuniting with Nostalgia
The first highlight is the Isumi Railway, where participants will visit Kuniyoshi Station and Otaki Station. Here, they can discover preserved models like the
Kih30 62 and
Kih28 2346. The
Kih30 62, manufactured in 1966 and used until 2012, served pridefully in the region. In contrast, the
Kih28 2346, built in 1964, embodies the spirit of Japan's past transport systems and showcases modifications from various regions. Additionally, the
Kih52 125, a model that no longer operates, is displayed at Otaki Station, highlighting the evolution of train design and operational capacity in Japan.
2.
Poppo no Oka - Special Opening of 2200 Series Electric Train
Next, visitors will head to Poppo no Oka located in the Isumi City area, where a special opening of the
2200 Series Electric Train (Deha 2211) is set to occur. This event allows access inside the historic train, a rarely offered opportunity. Known as one of the first high-performance trains in its era, the Deha 2211’s lightweight design helped to modernize rail travel in Japan during the post-war economic boom.
3.
Kih10 Preservation Society - An Exclusive Look at Kih10 11
The finale of the journey takes participants to the Kih10 Preservation Society. Here they can view the
Kih10 11 (Kih1001), a train that was rarely open to the public. Built in 1955, this train has a storied history that includes service on New Japan Railways and later for the Kashima Rinkai Railway. This particular model represents one of the few remaining Kih10 models in a preserved state, making it a significant piece of railway heritage.
