Awareness Campaign Against Syphilis This Summer: A Focus on Youth and Prevention

Summer Syphilis Awareness Campaign 2023

This summer, Tokyo is rolling out an urgent campaign to combat the rising syphilis cases that have reached alarming levels in recent years. According to reports, the number of syphilis patients in the Tokyo area hit 3,760 in 2024, marking the highest figure for four consecutive years. Although there was a slight decrease to 3,386 cases in 2025, the rates remain significantly high, especially among young people. Moreover, the issue of syphilis infection among pregnant women and the alarming cases of congenital syphilis in newborns have been an area of concern.

One of the challenges with syphilis is that symptoms may not always be evident, or they can disappear temporarily, leading to unawareness of infection. Even with effective treatment, there is still a risk of reinfection. In light of these issues, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to enhance its prevention strategies during the summer holiday season by spreading accurate knowledge about syphilis and promoting early detection and treatment.

Specific Initiatives

(1) Distribution of Awareness Videos in Stadiums and Busy Districts

The campaign will utilize large screens in venues such as the UMFG Stadium (National Stadium) and busy commercial areas to share educational videos. For instance, during the match between FC Tokyo and JEF United Chiba on August 21, this crucial information will be broadcasted.

(2) Utilizing Social Media for Youth Engagement

The campaign will also target younger demographics, particularly those aspiring to start families, through a vibrant social media presence. Information will be disseminated across platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Google Display Ads to inform and engage users.

(3) Collaboration with Nonprofit Organizations

Through partnerships with various organizations offering consultation support in districts like Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Shibuya, distribution of informational cards will take place in high-traffic areas. These cards will provide valuable insights into syphilis prevention and testing options.

(4) Additional Outreach Efforts

In collaboration with local health offices and various organizations, the campaign will involve the placement of informative posters and other materials in pharmacies, health centers, and community buildings to maximize outreach and education.
