End of Services at Tama Tokiwa-so Housing Complex Announced

Tama Tokiwa-so Housing Complex Service Conclusion

In a recent decision that has left many in the creative community reflective, the Tama Tokiwa-so housing complex's services, managed by the non-profit organization LEGIKA, will officially conclude by November 30, 2025. This unique shared housing initiative, launched on June 1, 2021, was designed to nurture manga artists and has successfully produced numerous professional creators during its operational period.

With a staggering average occupancy rate of approximately 99.77% in 2023, the Tama Tokiwa-so complex quickly became a sought-after residence for budding manga artists. The complex has not only attracted applicants but also garnered a waiting list exceeding one year, highlighting its popularity and impact within the manga community. As of March 2025, over 30% of the residents have debuted as professional manga artists, making Tama Tokiwa-so a premier living space for emerging talents in Japan.

The motivation behind the establishment of Tama Tokiwa-so aligns with the Japanese government's 'New Cool Japan Strategy', aimed at bolstering the content industry by enhancing human resources in the field. LEGIKA believes that this initiative holds significant economic value, which led to continuous dialogue with involved stakeholders. Despite these efforts, the current lease's expiration and the landlord's decision necessitated the unfortunate conclusion of this beloved program.

In light of this change, LEGIKA plans to relocate its manga artist development efforts to the Kaikeidai Tokiwa-soru Room in Ota City, which features 55 rooms. This facility promises broader shared spaces for practical creativity and networking opportunities. Through these avenues, LEGIKA hopes to foster an environment even more conducive to artistic expression and collaboration.

Moreover, the supportive living conditions provided in Hino City have been well appreciated by many manga artists. Consequently, LEGIKA will continue to offer services at their one-room style partnership housing, the Hino Tokiwa-so Studio, targeting active manga creators living in the area.

We express our sincere gratitude to all who supported and cherished the Tama Tokiwa-so complex over the years. Its impact on the manga industry and its community will not be forgotten.
