Building Healthier Communities: Our Health Our Wellness
In a significant step towards improving health in underserved communities, Black Health Matters (BHM) is set to launch its national campaign called
Our Health Our Wellness (OHOW) in April 2026. The campaign will kick off during the prestigious American College of Cardiology Conference (ACC.26), taking place from March 28 to 30 in New Orleans. BHM has strategically chosen this event to unveil OHOW and engage with health professionals and stakeholders within the pharmaceutical industry.
Aiming for Better Health Outcomes
The goal of the OHOW campaign is to empower individuals from low-resourced backgrounds by equipping them with the knowledge and resources necessary for healthier lifestyles. By focusing on prevention, intervention, and increased access to health resources, OHOW aims to tackle existing health disparities affecting marginalized communities.
Health-related information will be provided in both English and Spanish to further broaden its reach across diverse populations. Throughout April, the initiative will address critical health issues that significantly impact Americans, including Alzheimer’s, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and mental health, along with vital aspects related to heart health such as cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension.
Engagement Through Education
BHM Executive Director and founder Roslyn Y. Daniels emphasized the importance of access to health services as individuals age. “I want OHOW to be a movement where people can learn about what affects them and their families. It's essential for them to talk to their doctors and know about the next steps to take for their health,” she said. The campaign encourages individuals to understand their health journeys, which is particularly vital for those in medical underserved areas.
By fostering better health literacy, OHOW hopes to support communities in proactively managing their health risks through preventive measures, early detection, and appropriate interventions.
A Call to Action
The OHOW initiative represents more than just a monthly celebration of health; it is a clarion call to action for communities to prioritize their wellness. With a commitment to raising awareness, advocating for health equity, and empowering individuals, BHM envisions this campaign as a means to close the gaps in health outcomes.
To gather more citizens into this crucial movement, BHM is planning a robust schedule of events and educational seminars offered throughout the month. Some of the anticipated activities include:
- - Saturday and Monday, March 28-30: Participation at ACC.26 with a launch booth for OHOW.
- - Thursday, April 2: Health Fair at the Church of Christ Ladies’ Conference in Houston with a focus on cardiology, oncology, and mental health.
- - Friday-Saturday, April 2-4: Mobile mammography at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Phoenix, emphasizing breast cancer prevention.
- - April 8: Webinar on the necessity of vaccinations as lifelong wellness strategies.
- - April 14: Seminar on cancer prevention and healthy daily habits.
- - April 22: Information session on living with cancer and essential considerations.
- - April 29: Discussion on the future of cancer treatment innovations.
These initiatives aim to not only disseminate crucial information but also engage communities in meaningful conversations about their health. Through BHM's efforts, participants will be invited to learn and take actionable steps towards becoming their healthiest selves.
