Sumitomo Corporation of Americas Supports Colombian Earthquake Relief with Generous Donation

Sumitomo Corporation of Americas Supports Relief Efforts in Colombia

In a significant act of corporate social responsibility, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas (SCOA) has announced a donation of $50,000 to the Colombian Red Cross. This contribution is aimed at supporting relief efforts in response to the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026. The funds will be used to provide essential services, including temporary shelters, safe drinking water, and other critical supplies needed by the affected communities.

Kotaro Tameda, the President and CEO of Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, expressed the company's deep commitment to assisting communities in times of crisis. He stated, "As a company with operations, employees and partners throughout Colombia, we are compelled to help in this significant time of need. By contributing directly to the Colombian Red Cross, we are equipping first responders with the vital resources they need to save lives, deliver urgent care, and support the community's path to recovery. Every dollar makes a difference in restoring hope and resilience where it's needed most."

Understanding the Crisis

The earthquake, measured at 7.4 magnitude, inflicted widespread destruction across several of Colombia’s most populous regions, as reported by the Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo (UNGRD), the country’s national unit for disaster risk management. The impact has reverberated through nearly 500 municipalities, resulting in 329 fatalities and over 4,500 injuries, with 234 individuals still reported as missing.

In an effort to further enhance the relief operations, Sumitomo has also initiated an employee giving campaign through its corporate giving platform. This program encourages employees from participating SC Americas offices to make individual donations, with the company matching these contributions through its existing matching gift program. This initiative opens additional opportunities for employees to actively engage in the earthquake recovery efforts.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

The commitment of the Sumitomo Corporation Group extends beyond immediate financial aid, as it aims for sustainable corporate growth while addressing key social issues such as disaster relief. This donation not only underscores SCOA's dedication to corporate citizenship but also emphasizes the importance of supporting vulnerable communities during critical times.
