Deqing's Unique Aquaculture System

On October 31, 2025, during a prestigious ceremony in Rome, Italy, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) awarded a blue certificate to representatives from Deqing in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province. This accolade officially recognizes the "Deqing Composite System for Freshwater Pearl Mussels" as part of the FAO's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This event marks a significant achievement for Deqing, as it is now the second time a system from Huzhou has been designated as GIAHS, the first being the "Fish Pond System with Mulberry Cultivation" which received the same recognition back in 2017. With this recent addition, China boasts a total of 25 GIAHS, cementing its position as a global leader in this arena.

The historical significance of Deqing as a center for freshwater pearl cultivation dates back approximately 800 years to the Southern Song Dynasty. This long-standing heritage has fostered the development of a unique aquaculture system that integrates various aquatic species, ensuring both ecological balance and economic viability.
