Deqing's Blue Certification: A Jewel in Agricultural Heritage Recognized by the FAO

Deqing's Unique Aquaculture System

On October 31, 2025, during a prestigious ceremony in Rome, Italy, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) awarded a blue certificate to representatives from Deqing in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province. This accolade officially recognizes the "Deqing Composite System for Freshwater Pearl Mussels" as part of the FAO's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This event marks a significant achievement for Deqing, as it is now the second time a system from Huzhou has been designated as GIAHS, the first being the "Fish Pond System with Mulberry Cultivation" which received the same recognition back in 2017. With this recent addition, China boasts a total of 25 GIAHS, cementing its position as a global leader in this arena.

The historical significance of Deqing as a center for freshwater pearl cultivation dates back approximately 800 years to the Southern Song Dynasty. This long-standing heritage has fostered the development of a unique aquaculture system that integrates various aquatic species, ensuring both ecological balance and economic viability. The model demonstrates how traditional practices can align with environmental preservation, creating a sustainable path forward.

At the GeoNow conference, held in Deqing on October 22, Dejan Jakovljevic, the FAO's Director of Digitalization and Informatics, remarked on the seamless connection between digital technology and heritage conservation. He emphasized the potential of modern tools and techniques to provide scientific support for protecting such valuable ecosystems. By promoting the "Deqing Composite Freshwater Pearl Mussel Fishing System," not only can heritage be preserved, but it also opens avenues for international collaboration and integrated development of the entire "pearl +" industry chain in Deqing’s pearl industry.

The distinction of being a GIAHS is not merely a recognition of the tradition-rich Chinese discourse around pearl cultivation. It signifies a forward-thinking approach that weaves together tradition and technology, providing innovative ways to rejuvenate agricultural heritages. This award serves as an affirmation of the wisdom that has allowed the Chinese to successfully farm pearls for centuries and acknowledges the potential for a brighter future through the fusion of past methodologies and digital advancements.

In essence, the title of GIAHS and the technological innovations pursued by Deqing reflect intertwined paths toward sustainable development, bridging agricultural practices with modernity. As the global community acknowledges this noteworthy achievement, it also sets the stage for Deqing’s pearls to reach international markets, inviting a new era for the region’s tradition of pearl farming.

With this recognition, Deqing is not just a place of historical significance but now represents a model for sustainable practices in aquaculture, showcasing the beauty of harmony between economic interests and environmental sustainability. The journey forward promises exciting developments for both the local community and the global marketplace as Deqing’s heritage continues to gain recognition and respect worldwide.
