Raytheon Secures $536 Million Contract from US Navy for Advanced Radar Technology

Raytheon Awarded $536 Million Contract for SPY-6 Radar Family

In an impressive display of confidence in advanced defense systems, Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX, has secured a substantial contract worth $536 million from the U.S. Navy. The focus of this contract is the SPY-6 family of radars, which are central to maritime defense capabilities. This new contract marks a continuation of the support that Raytheon has been providing for the integration and production of these sophisticated radar systems.

Contract Highlights

The awarded contract will not only enhance radars used on U.S. Navy ships but will also upgrade Flight IIA destroyers with the SPY-6(V)4 variant. According to Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, the SPY-6 is acknowledged as the most advanced radar currently deployed in the naval fleet. It provides a new standard of defense against continuously evolving threats that maritime vessels may face.

Under the terms of this sole-source agreement, Raytheon is tasked with offering ongoing support for the SPY-6 radars. This includes training services, engineering support, installation on ships, integration and testing, as well as software upgrades aimed at enhancing radar capabilities. The need for such advancements is paramount, as the U.S. Navy seeks to bolster its technological edge in maritime operations.

Future Prospects of SPY-6

At present, SPY-6 radars have been installed on two new U.S. Navy vessels, with three additional ships undergoing various testing phases in 2025. Over the next decade, it is anticipated that more than 60 U.S. Navy ships will be outfitted with the SPY-6 radar systems, significantly increasing the fleet's capacity to defend against a multitude of threats, including air, surface, and ballistic missiles.

The contract work is expected to continue until May 2026, ensuring that the U.S. Navy remains at the forefront of naval defense technology with cutting-edge radar systems at their disposal.
