MDA Space Expands Its Role in Satellite Communications



MDA Space Ltd., a prominent player in the expanding global space industry, recently announced an impressive contract valued at $474 million with Telesat LEO ULC, a subsidiary of Telesat Corporation. This partnership is set to significantly bolster the Telesat Lightspeed low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, aimed at enhancing satellite communication capabilities for both commercial and defense sectors.

The expansion entails the addition of 69 new satellites, increasing the total number of fully funded satellites from 156 to 225, alongside an increase of 27 satellites to the previous agreement for 198 units. This agreement outlines the commitment to enhancing connectivity across the Canadian Arctic under the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project-Polar (ESCP-P) initiative. The project will focus on ensuring that military operations can be conducted smoothly in challenging environments.

In addition to the new satellites, the expanded contract includes vital upgrades, such as the addition of 500 MHz of military Ka-band spectrum to the Lightspeed satellites currently in development. These enhancements will help replace similar amounts of commercial Ka-band spectrum, ensuring a more effective communication network across Canada’s high-latitude regions.

The MDA AURORA™ Satellite System


All the MDA AURORA™ satellites being developed for this project are set to feature advanced technology that fulfills critical national defense objectives by enabling secure military communications. The satellites will be manufactured at MDA's state-of-the-art facility located in Montréal, further reinforcing the capabilities required for Canada’s defense strategies and allied obligations.

Notably, the Canadian Government has also designated MDA Space as the prime contractor for a new constellation of Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) and X-band satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).
