PVA's Healthcare Summit + Expo Launches in New Orleans
On August 25, 2025, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) commenced its much-anticipated 2025 Healthcare Summit + Expo in New Orleans. This unique event, committed to addressing spinal cord injuries, ALS, and MS, gathers approximately 400 interdisciplinary healthcare professionals from both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the private sector. The four-day conference aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange in an effort to enhance patient care.
A Vital Gathering for Healthcare Innovators
The summit serves as a platform for clinicians to gain valuable insights into the most recent advancements and breakthroughs in managing spinal cord injuries and diseases. As highlighted by Robert Thomas, the national president of PVA, delivering high-quality care to veterans with spinal injuries demands continuous innovation and growth. The attendees can look forward to a wealth of knowledge encapsulated in 110 expert-led talks, plus exhibits from 60 innovative companies.
Notable speakers include the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Doug Collins, who will provide updates on the latest policy initiatives and resources available to support veterans. Participants can expect a dynamic mix of research updates and practical applications aimed at improving treatment outcomes for their patients.
Empowering Clinicians with Knowledge
Lindsay Perlman, PVA's director of research and education, emphasized the importance of equipping clinicians with the latest tools and therapies. These efforts are integral for empowering healthcare professionals on the front lines, ensuring they are well-prepared to apply new knowledge to enhance the quality of life for veterans confronting these challenges. The conference aims to provide continuing education credits, enabling healthcare workers to advance their education while improving care standards.
Honoring the Achievements of Clinicians
The summit also features the PVA's Clinical Excellence Awards, which recognize outstanding commitment to veteran care. This year’s winners include clinicians from various renowned healthcare systems, such as Dr. Doug Ota and Dr. Thomas M. Dixon, among others, who have consistently demonstrated dedication to innovative care practices. Their stories inspire attendees and showcase the impactful work happening within the community.
A Look at the Numbers
Approximately 305,000 individuals in the U.S. live with spinal cord injuries, with around 18,000 new cases emerging each year. Notably, the VA caters to roughly 28,000 veterans with SCI and over 22,000 diagnosed with MS. Each year, around 1,000 veterans are diagnosed with ALS. The PVA’s efforts are crucial, aiming to not only provide support for these veterans but also to enhance the overall standards of care that these patients receive.
Gratitude to Supportive Sponsors
The success of the summit is made possible through generous sponsorships from leading organizations, including Biogen, First Nation Group, Genentech, and others.
