Dr. Kim Yu Assumes Presidency of California Academy of Family Physicians, Advocating for Healthcare Reform
Dr. Kim Yu Takes Office as President of CAFP
Dr. Kim Yu, MD, FAAFP, DABFM, has officially taken on the role of president for the California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP), representing over 10,000 members statewide. Serving out of Orange County, Dr. Yu will champion numerous initiatives aimed at advancing healthcare quality and access during her one-year term.
In her inaugural address, Dr. Yu underscored the essence of family medicine: "Family medicine is the specialty for those who want to practice comprehensive, whole-person care and build deep relationships with patients and communities." This focus reinforces the belief that healthcare should prioritize vulnerable populations, ensuring equitable access to services regardless of background.
Dr. Yu's own journey into family medicine was profoundly personal. Her mother’s struggle with chronic kidney disease illuminated for her the vital role a family physician plays, not just in treatment but in offering compassion during life's challenging moments. This experience has shaped her commitment to providing empathetic care, advocating for her patients as she honors her mother's legacy.
With a rich background in healthcare leadership, Dr. Yu previously held the position of President and Board Chair of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and has been actively involved with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Her responsibilities included pivotal roles like serving as a delegate at the Congress of Delegates and leading the National Conference of Constituency Leaders. Her relocation to California saw her seamlessly integrate into CAFP, where she has taken on various leadership roles, including that of Speaker and President-Elect.
Taking the helm at CAFP comes at a crucial juncture for healthcare in California. The state contends with ongoing challenges such as access barriers, workforce shortages, and healthcare disparities. Dr. Yu listed her main objectives as strengthening the primary care workforce, pushing for payment reform, advocating for public health, and promoting the well-being of physicians—crucial elements as the state navigates its healthcare landscape.
"At this pivotal moment for healthcare and family medicine, there's an increasing acknowledgment of the need for a fair and accessible system. Family physicians are crucial to this transformation," stated Dr. Yu. She believes investing in primary care equips communities with the robust health foundation necessary for improving overall public health.
Currently, Dr. Yu works with Kaiser Permanente Urgent Care and serves as a national strategy consultant for the American Board of Family Medicine. Her commitment extends to teaching, leadership development, and equitable healthcare advocacy. Furthermore, she represents family physicians globally as the WONCA Liaison to the World Health Organization.
