Call for Funding to Support California's Parent and Youth Helpline Amid Rising Family Strain

Advocating for Families: The Urgent Need for Funding in California

In a critical appeal made at the California State Capitol, Parents Anonymous® came together with state leaders, advocates, and families to demand a substantial funding commitment of $5 million annually for the next three years. This funding is essential to sustain and expand the California Parent & Youth Helpline, a vital resource for families under immense pressure amid rising economic and mental health issues.

A Lifeline for Families

Amid increasing living costs and barriers to accessing mental health services, California families are in urgent need of support. During the press conference held on April 29, 2026, Dr. Lisa Pion-Berlin, the President and CEO of Parents Anonymous®, articulated the gravity of the situation. "Families across California are reaching out because they are at a breaking point. The Helpline is often their first call when overwhelmed, isolated, and unsure where to turn. It acts as a critical lifeline for parents and children alike, helping them navigate crises before they escalate."

The California Parent & Youth Helpline, established in 2020 in partnership with Governor Gavin Newsom and the State Legislature, is crucial for families. Since its inception, it has answered over 132,000 calls, texts, and chats, while providing more than 92,000 referrals to community services. In total, the Helpline has facilitated over 1.6 million resource engagements, ensuring that families statewide receive the support they need, in over 240 languages.

Rising Demand and Insufficient Resources

Despite the overwhelming demand for assistance, funding constraints have led to distressing abandonment rates. Unfortunately, more than 35,000 families have been left without access to 24/7 support. With over one in three Californian households struggling to meet basic needs, many families face heightened stress and mental health challenges.

Parents Anonymous® offers evidence-based programs and support that significantly reduce instances of child neglect and abuse. Research indicates that 85% of parents felt more optimistic after reaching out to the Helpline, while participation in support groups led to a 63% reduction in child abuse cases. However, to maintain these vital services, especially in underserved areas, sustained funding is paramount.

A Call to Action

Parents Anonymous® passionately urges the California Governor and Legislature to prioritize this critical funding, ensuring that families have access to immediate support and intervention services. Investing in the Helpline means not only aiding families in real-time but also freeing communities from long-term social and economic costs associated with family crises.
