Shanghai Electric Signs Major PV Project in Romania



Shanghai Electric, a leading player in renewable energy solutions, has marked a significant achievement in its commitment to green energy with the recent signing of the second phase of its 342 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic project in Parau, Romania, in collaboration with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. This agreement, celebrated on October 1, is a crucial milestone in enhancing Romania's clean energy infrastructure.

Commitment to Renewable Energy


As Shanghai Electric's fourth photovoltaic initiative in Romania, this project underscores the company's dedication to supporting clean energy development across Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Wu Lei, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, emphasized the company's role in driving the region's energy transition through technological advancements in wind power, photovoltaics, and energy storage systems. By executing such extensive projects, Shanghai Electric is not only helping to meet Romania's energy needs but also actively participating in the global shift towards sustainable energy.

With the completion of the Parau Phase II project, which will also provide electricity to residential and commercial sectors, Shanghai Electric intends to play a pivotal role in transforming Romania's energy landscape. The project promises to deliver substantial volumes of clean electricity, thereby supporting local communities while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Strategic Expansion in Romania


The significance of this project extends beyond mere capacity. It is also part of Econergy’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint in Romania and Central and Eastern Europe. Andrea Loi, Vice President of Operations at Econergy, expressed confidence in partnering with Shanghai Electric, focusing on leveraging its robust technical expertise and operational capabilities to ensure the project's success.

Prior projects, such as the earlier phase of this PV initiative—which generated 91.4 MW—have set a solid foundation for Shanghai Electric’s operations in Romania. This earlier project, commissioned successfully in November 2024, significantly contributed to the country's energy grid by supplying power to around 70,000 households and reducing carbon emissions by approximately 6,800 tons each year.

Additionally, Shanghai Electric's portfolio in Romania includes the Schultu 56 MW PV Project, which is currently in its operational phase after receiving provisional acceptance earlier this year, and the Ovidi's 60 MW project, which is presently under construction after being contracted in January.

As of October 2025, the total installed capacity of Shanghai Electric’s projects in Romania is approximately 550 MW, which reinforces their commitment to advance long-term clean energy development in the nation.

Strengthening International Ties


On the same day that the contracting was announced, Mr. Wu Lei held discussions with key stakeholders, including the Chinese Ambassador to Romania and the Chairman of the Romanian Energy Committee. These meetings highlighted Romania's active role in advancing its energy structure transformation with a focus on solar energy, energy storage, and other innovative technologies. The talks pointed towards possibilities for fruitful collaborations involving Shanghai Electric and other notable enterprises in the renewable energy sector.

Moreover, Mr. Wu Lei engaged with representatives from Austria’s OMV Group to explore further cooperation in the energy domain, indicating Shanghai Electric’s proactive approach to expand its influence and leadership in Romania’s renewable energy transition.
