Transforming Station Operations with AI Technology

In a groundbreaking initiative, Electric Engineering Co. and Cyber Core have collaborated to implement an AI-based video analysis for passenger flow studies at JR Kitakami Station. This project, supported by JR East's Morioka branch, aims to digitally transform how passenger movement is tracked in station environments. Through this innovative approach, both firms strive to improve congestion management, optimize station facilities, and enhance user safety and comfort during rail travel.

The Need for Accurate Passenger Flow Data

Capturing accurate movement patterns of passengers within a station has become increasingly crucial. Traditionally, this involved manual counting by surveyors, which presented challenges such as time consumption and difficulty in simultaneously monitoring multiple locations. This prompted the introduction of advanced AI techniques to develop a more efficient method of data collection.

Implementation of AI Video Analysis

As part of this study, five strategically positioned cameras were installed within the station. These cameras provided video feeds that were analyzed using Cyber Core's AI video analysis technology. The initial findings have shown significant promise in alleviating the burden on surveyors by providing high-precision movement data without the limitations of manual counting. The AI system efficiently tracks the number of passengers disembarking from specific train cars and platforms, delivering real-time insights into traffic patterns.
