Dream Across America Foundation Launches National Initiative
The Dream Across America Foundation (DAAF) has officially rolled out a nationwide campaign to support U.S.-born children who find themselves living abroad due to the deportation of their parents. This humanitarian initiative addresses the needs of what are known as 'de-facto deportees'—American citizens born in the U.S.—who are forced to navigate life in foreign countries, often fraught with challenges.
Understanding the Situation
As per reports from the Mexican government in 2023, it is estimated that over 417,000 U.S.-born children currently reside in Mexico. These young citizens encounter numerous difficulties ranging from inadequate educational opportunities due to language barriers to emotional and psychological trauma from abrupt dislocation. Many are deprived of essential medical care that was previously accessible in the U.S., placing them at significant health risks.
Windy Fama, DAAF's Executive Director, emphasized the critical nature of this situation, stating, "This work is not just about providing services; it's about restoring identity and rights. Without timely intervention, a generation of talent and potential is at eminent risk."
The foundation’s expanded initiative is designed to serve as a lifeline to these children, ensuring they remain connected to their birth country while providing necessary resources to facilitate a successful homecoming.
Core Pillars of the Initiative
DAAF’s initiative centers on five fundamental pillars that aim to facilitate a stable life for displaced children and chart a course for repatriation:
1.
Education Access - Establishing U.S.-aligned academic pathways, incorporating tutoring and counseling services to prevent educational setbacks.
2.
Health and Well-being - Providing trauma-informed care and psychological support to help children heal from the stress of displacement.
3.
Legal Documentation Guidance - Assisting families in understanding their children's U.S. citizenship rights, helping retrieve essential records, and navigating safe return processes.
4.
Essential Support - Ensuring access to basic necessities like food and technology, and offering emergency assistance to at-risk families.
5.
Repatriation Program - Creating a structured pathway for children ready to return, supporting their transition back into U.S. schools and communities.
A Nationwide Call to Action
The DAAF believes that addressing the plight of these U.S.-born children is a collective responsibility that requires a national dialogue. They are urging leaders, educators, and philanthropic organizations to join forces in building a coordinated support system that safeguards these children's futures in the United States.
The Dream Across America Foundation (DAAF), a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is dedicated to upholding the dignity and potential of displaced American children, ensuring that the American Dream remains attainable, no matter where these children currently reside.
