Okayama University Hosts J-PEAKS Special Seminar on Advanced Materials Science

On April 3, 2026, Okayama University is set to host the J-PEAKS special seminar titled "New Horizons in Advanced Materials Science" at its Tsushima campus. This event will attract prominent researchers from around the world to share their insights on materials development and application.
The seminar will be hosted by Professor Yuta Nishina from the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, along with approximately 40 other researchers from various fields including materials and chemical engineering. The seminar aims to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas between domestic and international scholars.
Professor Nishina will introduce the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's initiative, J-PEAKS, which aims to enhance the competitive research capacity of select universities. He will also discuss the ongoing research at the "Plant and Light Energy Development Hub," which utilizes J-PEAKS resources to advance studies on carbon nanomaterials, hybrid materials, and sustainable technologies.
The presentations will feature several esteemed speakers:
- Professor Daisuke Suzuki from the Graduate School of Environmental and Natural Science will dive into the "Precision Design and Assembly of Functional Polymer Microgels." He aims to promote the realization of environmentally friendly circular materials by presenting microgels with uniform nanostructures that contrast with traditional constructs.
- Professor Zhengtang Luo from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will address "Graphene and Functional Polymer Materials for Energy Sensing." He will showcase research that employs computational sciences to derive guidelines for material design, including the development of catalytic converters for carbon dioxide.
- Professor Luyi Sun from the University of Connecticut will present on "Nano-structured Polymers and Composite Materials for Energy and Catalysis." His talk will highlight the development of variable function materials inspired by biological structures of creatures like octopuses and sharks, focusing on their durability in high-temperature environments.
Okayama University's president, Professor Yasuto Nasu, who will also attend the seminar, remarked that the university is committed to leveraging J-PEAKS to propel innovative material development. He emphasized that interactions with international researchers are invaluable for advancing research and technology development.
Through J-PEAKS, Okayama University aims to actively drive innovative material development, contributing globally to the advancement of science and sustainable practices. The university is dedicated to building a solid foundation as a regionally-oriented, research-intensive institution, promoting open collaboration and innovation.
Participants can look forward to an enriching sharing of knowledge at this event, which underscores Okayama University's commitment to addressing global challenges through research excellence.
