reDesign Celebrates Updates to Future9 Competency Framework for Modern Education

reDesign Updates Future9 Competencies

In a significant move to strengthen competency-based education, reDesign, an organization dedicated to educational innovation for over 15 years, has announced updates to its Future9 Competency Framework. This update serves as a crucial resource for K-12 leaders and educators striving to enhance learning outcomes for students.

Aligning Competencies with Global Standards

The recently released Future9 updates incorporate insights from extensive piloting and research conducted over the past year. These updates have been crafted to align seamlessly with both national and international frameworks defining essential skills necessary for today’s learners. According to reDesign's Executive Director, Antonia Rudenstine, there is an emerging consensus on the skills that young people must acquire to thrive in their future endeavors. Rudenstine emphasizes, "If your school or district has developed a Learner Profile or utilizes frameworks like Durable Skills or the 21st Century Skills, the Future9's observable and developmental progression for K-12 serves as a practical bridge to effective implementation in the classroom."

The Future9 Competencies provide a flexible model that can be adopted or adapted by schools and educational systems. These competencies are grounded in current research on cognitive, social-emotional, and youth development. They are also informed by comprehensive national and international data that highlight the evolving landscape of work, community involvement, and higher education.

Comprehensive Implementation Resources

Accompanying the new Future9 Competencies are a plethora of free resources designed to support educators in implementing these competencies effectively. This includes detailed guides, activities, and an open-source Competency-based Education Resource Hub. The resource hub consists of templates, implementation guides, and translations available in four languages: Arabic, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, ensuring accessibility for diverse populations.

Future9 Webinar and Community Engagement

For educators and system leaders keen to explore these updates further, reDesign is hosting a Future9 webinar on March 13, 2025, at 1 p.m. ET. This event aims to provide in-depth insights into the Future9 Competencies and discuss practical strategies for their integration into educational practices. Participants can register for this informative session by visiting the reDesign website at www.redesignu.org/future9.
