BAE Systems Introduces Ascent™ Spacecraft
BAE Systems has recently unveiled its new
Ascent™ spacecraft, a significant addition to the
Elevation spacecraft line that is designed to foster both space superiority and exploration efforts. With rapid advancements in space operations, Ascent™ aims to address critical demands in the space domain through its innovative features.
As per the company's announcement on April 14, 2026, the Ascent spacecraft is tailored to facilitate a variety of dynamic space missions. Its design incorporates advanced
maneuverability capabilities, which notably include high-thrust propulsion systems and refueling capabilities, making it ideal for sustained operations in various orbital environments.
The Ascent spacecraft stands out for its
rideshare capability, allowing it to host multiple payloads efficiently, maximizing mission flexibility. This means it can transport small satellites and cargo not just to low Earth orbit, but also to medium Earth orbit and beyond, including critical lunar missions.
Thai Sheridan, Vice President and General Manager of Military Space at BAE Systems Space Mission Systems, remarked, "The inclusion of Ascent enhances our ability to conduct dynamic space operations and address threats in cislunar space. This spacecraft provides versatile mobility and logistics across expanded orbital environments, featuring exceptional maneuverability."
Ascent’s capacity to operate as a 'space tug' furthers its versatility, permitting it to shift vital cargo across different orbits, a pivotal aspect for both exploration and scientific missions aimed at returning to the moon. Bonnie Patterson, Vice President and General Manager of Civil Space, noted, "Our Ascent spacecraft will significantly contribute to our efforts in space science and exploration, supporting the movement of essential cargo."
The Elevation line includes various standardized spacecraft products, amongst which are the Summit™ and Trek™ platforms. These offerings cater to a broad spectrum of customer needs, emphasizing affordability and timely delivery based on seven decades of experience in the space systems sector.
Brad Shogrin, Vice President and General Manager of National Space, reiterated the growing demand within the space defense industry and underscored the importance of the Elevation spacecraft. He stated, "The timely delivery of our reliable Elevation spacecraft highlights our commitment to meeting the accelerating needs of the sector and enhancing the capabilities of integrated programs. These programs focus on creating synergy between payloads and spacecraft buses, along with managing operational support for our clients."
The first
pathfinder spacecraft for the Ascent line is set for delivery by 2027, marking a step forward in BAE Systems’ commitment to innovation and leadership in the aerospace and defense industry.
