Release Announcement: LaboJet-1500Bio
MicroJet Corporation, based in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, has officially announced the launch of its ultra-high precision micro-volume spotter, the
LaboJet-1500Bio, on
November 28, 2025. This revolutionary device is set to make waves in the
synthetic biology and biotechnology sectors, which are highlighted as key areas for investment by Japan's Growth Strategy Headquarters.
Expanding Inkjet Technology Applications
Traditional dispensing technologies, including dispensers, have struggled to accurately dispense in the pL to nL range, leading to significant variability at low volumes. In contrast, inkjet technology can achieve high-precision dispensing and spotting in the picoliter range with minimal variation. By ejecting liquids non-contact from print heads, this method provides consistent results unaffected by substrate surface characteristics.
Inkjet technology generates tiny droplets for applications such as compound screening, cell handling, and the production of diagnostic chips, positioning itself as a critical tool in life sciences.
Challenges and Solutions with Inkjet Technology
One major challenge with inkjet technology is ensuring stable ejection performance through adjustments of driving parameters based on the properties of each liquid material. The
LaboJet-1500Bio is equipped with the industry's first automatic ejection evaluation system, known as
intelliJET, which optimizes ejection conditions and automates volume adjustments. Additionally, the device features a specialized life sciences head allowing for precise dispensing in the picoliter to nanoliter range. This innovation enables even those without deep expertise in inkjet technology to perform stable micro-dispensing and spotting consistently.
IntelliJET Automatic Evaluation System
The
intelliJET system utilizes image analysis techniques to automatically adjust ejection conditions and ejection volumes of the inkjet heads. Unlike traditional systems, this makes experiments accessible to users without specialist knowledge. By measuring the volume during the dispensing and spotting processes, the system ensures quality control throughout the workflow. This automation leverages over 28 years of accumulated expertise in inkjet applications within the life sciences sector, significantly lightening the workload of experimental staff.
Life Sciences-Specific Head
General inkjet heads designed for printers find it challenging to eject liquids with properties close to pure water. This typically requires a volume of several mL to produce micro-droplets in the pL to tens of pL range. Additionally, smaller nozzle diameters lead to clogging when handling particles such as proteins and cells.
To address these challenges, MicroJet has developed the
GlassJet, a life sciences-specific head capable of handling reagents with volumes starting at approximately 100μL. With a larger nozzle diameter, this design minimizes the risk of clogging and accommodates a wide range of liquid types, including pure water, alcohol, and various organic solvents. The
LaboJet-1500Bio also permits the use of a disposable head,
PipeJet, to achieve nanoliter dispensing and spotting.
