Tiryaki Agro and Djibouti Ports Authority Sign MOU for Tadjourah Port Development

In a notable development for regional trade and supply chain resilience, Tiryaki Agro has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA). The agreement sets the stage for the future expansion, modernization, and operation of the Tadjourah port, a crucial point for agricultural trade in the Horn of Africa. This collaboration is poised to reinforce Djibouti's status as a pivotal logistics and trade hub, ensuring that agricultural trading and food security are prioritized.

The MoU outlines collaborative efforts to explore the technical, economic, and operational frameworks necessary for the port’s enhancement. It emphasizes not only infrastructural development but also improvements in logistics and storage capacities, aiming for a streamlined handling of agricultural and bulk cargo. By enhancing the port's capabilities, both parties hope to facilitate regional economic growth.

This initiative aligns with Djibouti’s long-term vision to solidify its role as a strategic conduit between Africa, the Middle East, and global markets. The infrastructure upgrades planned under this agreement could significantly promote food security in the region, establishing more robust supply chains that withstand volatility.

Süleyman Tiryakioğlu, CEO of Tiryaki Agro, expressed optimism regarding the MoU, highlighting its importance in the broader context of Djibouti’s trade and logistics development. “Signing this MoU represents a significant step forward in our long-term commitment to Djibouti. We appreciate the vision and support of the Djibouti government, the proactive role of the DPFZA, and the indispensable partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC),” said Tiryakioğlu.

This partnership builds upon previous collaborative efforts where the IFC supported Tiryaki Agro in recognizing and enhancing Djibouti’s potential as a key hub for regional agriculture and trade. The conducted feasibility studies will lay a solid groundwork for moving forward, indicating that private sector-led growth can indeed foster a more resilient and sustainable future.

The agreement also paves the way for negotiations surrounding a long-term concession for the port’s management and operations, which could further catalyze investment opportunities in the Port of Tadjourah. By focusing on developing the port's infrastructure and capabilities, Tiryaki Agro and DPFZA aim to ensure that Djibouti remains at the forefront of facilitating effective agricultural trade and enhancing food security across the Horn of Africa.

Overall, this MoU reflects a mutual commitment to unlocking the potential of Djibouti as a strategic logistics node. By ensuring continued collaborative efforts among all stakeholders involved, this project aspires to create a foundation for future investments, bolstering agricultural trade while contributing to a vibrant and sustainable economic landscape for the region.
