DW Fiber Enhances Sustainability for Toilet 7 at Osaka-Kansai Expo

The upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo in 2025 is set to showcase cutting-edge sustainability solutions, one of which is DW Fiber, a soil enhancement material made from domestic timber. This innovative product is being used as the planting substrate for Toilet 7, an eco-friendly facility that is part of the event’s overall commitment to sustainable design.

DaiKen Corporation, based in Osaka, is proud to supply this unique material for the planting bed around Toilet 7, which is strategically located near the Water Plaza at the Expo venue. With the completion of construction, Toilet 7 will be ready to welcome visitors from the very first day of the event, offering a sustainable solution for restroom facilities.

The Chief Creative Officer of VOID Inc., Yusuke Mizobata, who oversaw the development of Toilet 7, commented on the project’s vision. “Toilet 7 is designed in line with the Expo’s theme of experimenting with future societies. We have incorporated wall panels made from recyclable resin, manufactured using 3D printing technology. After the Expo, these panels can be ground down and repurposed as 3D printing materials or relocated for use in other projects,” he explained.

The choice of DW Fiber aligns perfectly with the sustainable philosophy behind Toilet 7. Utilizing by-products from timber processing—such as leftover materials and thinned wood—DW Fiber ensures that wood resources are effectively utilized. Mizobata highlighted how the product’s structure prevents soil erosion caused by coastal winds while also being lightweight and easy to work with, making it an ideal fit for the unique location of Toilet 7.

The Osaka-Kansai Expo carries the theme “Designing a Future Society Where Lives Shine,” focusing on creating distinctive and appealing pavilions that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Young architects are being entrusted with the design of 20 facilities, including rest areas and restrooms. Toilet 7 stands out for its curved paneling that reflects the surrounding landscape and light in a mirage-like fashion, fitting seamlessly into the plaza’s environment.

About DW Fiber

DW Fiber is a soil improvement material derived from domestic wood chips that undergo a unique defibrillation process. It is enriched with fulvic acid, a natural compound known to promote plant growth. When mixed with soil, DW Fiber enhances its physical properties, such as water retention and permeability, and improves its chemical properties, facilitating mineral supply and pH balancing. This makes it an excellent choice for revitalizing non-arable land and contributes to a wide range of green infrastructure projects.

Fulvic acid, a beneficial humic substance found in forests and soils, actively enhances photosynthesis and plant growth. This innovative technology is patented by Kokudo Bousai Gijutsu Co., Ltd., underscoring the advanced capabilities behind DW Fiber.

The integration of such sustainable solutions within the Osaka-Kansai Expo is vital for promoting eco-conscious practices. As we edge closer to 2025, the anticipation for the Expo grows, alongside the excitement surrounding the innovative designs that will pave the way for a greener future.
