Sinopec Unveils the World's Largest High-End PVA Production Facility
Sinopec Launches a Cutting-Edge PVA Production Facility
On August 5, 2026, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, marked a significant milestone in the chemical industry with the launch of a new production facility for specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at its subsidiary, Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. This ambitious project boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 50,000 tons, establishing it as the largest single-site production facility for high-end PVA in the world.
The new plant has already demonstrated its capabilities during the initial operational phases, successfully producing high-quality products that meet stringent market standards. Furthermore, the first shipment of PVA produced at this facility has already been dispatched to Europe, indicating a strong initial demand for its offerings.
With the addition of this new plant, the total PVA production capacity at the Chongqing location has surged to 210,000 tons per year. This increase is expected to significantly bolster the supply of specialty materials that are essential in various high-demand applications, including photovoltaics, electronics, optical films, and pharmaceuticals. The versatility of PVA further enhances its value, as it is not only biodegradable but also applicable in numerous sectors, such as textiles, construction materials, and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
Sinopec’s SVW Chemical currently offers over 100 different types of PVA, each tailored to meet specific performance demands and market needs. The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with advanced alcoholysis and precision purification technologies, allowing for the efficient mass production of specialized PVA products. This innovation was key in overcoming several technical challenges faced during construction, particularly relating to precise temperature control and maintaining consistent product quality.
The new polymerization process developed for this facility has allowed a 40% increase in production capacity compared to previous generational plants. Moreover, the facility is equipped with four exhaust and wastewater recovery systems, complemented by an automated packaging system, all designed to enhance resource and operational efficiency.
The project, which took 17 months to complete, achieved an impressive 1.98 million safe working hours. During the commissioning phase, the team worked diligently to optimize plant performance and process parameters, ensuring not only stable production but also consistent product quality.
SVW Chemical has accumulated over 40 years of expertise in PVA research and manufacturing. Its product lineup has expanded from a single type of PVA at the start of its operations to over 100 varieties today. The company exports more than 70 of its products to over 40 countries, establishing a robust presence in international markets, including Europe and the United States.
Looking into the future, SVW Chemical plans to leverage its enhanced capacity and research capabilities to develop additional high-quality specialty materials. The company aims to broaden its PVA portfolio and ensure a more reliable supply for customers around the globe, reinforcing Sinopec's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the chemical sector.
