In May 2026, Michter's Distillery will introduce its US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey, marking a significant milestone for the brand. Michter's President, Joseph J. Magliocco, noted that during the 1970s and 1980s, the Pennsylvania distillery's Sour Mash was the most sought-after whiskey. This latest release aims to capture the essence of that era with a contemporary twist.

Michter's US★1 Sour Mash has gained international acclaim, including its recognition as the “Whisky of the Year” by The Whisky Exchange in 2019, making it the first American whiskey ever to receive such an honor. The historical roots of sour mash whiskey trace back to 1818, when Catherine Carpenter of Casey County documented the first known recipe, a method that revolutionized whiskey production with enhanced consistency.

Dan McKee, Michter's Master Distiller, stated, “While most American whiskey utilizes the sour mash technique, it's misleading to suggest that our Sour Mash Whiskey is anything but delightful. On the contrary, it presents a harmonious blend of toffee notes and flavors reminiscent of stone fruits.” The suggested retail price for the newly released US★1 Barrel Strength is $120 per 750ml bottle, with a considerable proof of 111.5, equivalent to 55.75% ABV.

The established reputation of Michter's Small Batch Sour Mash, which is lauded for its smoothness at 86 proof, demonstrates the distillery's commitment to quality. Andrea Wilson, Michter's Master of Maturation, explains, “The new offering reflects the consistent elegance of our products, presented at barrel strength. By preserving the uncut nature of the whiskey and applying our specific filtration process, we aim to maintain the authentic character of the spirits.”
