On December 9, 2025, Kate Walsh was officially elected to the board of directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA), marking a significant addition to the organization’s leadership team. With a robust background in healthcare administration and a commitment to community service, Walsh is poised to play a key role in guiding the direction of the company during challenging times in the healthcare sector.
A Wealth of Experience
Walsh's impressive career spans over four decades in healthcare management, during which she has held several influential positions, most notably as the CEO of Boston Medical Center for 13 years. There, she managed a complex healthcare system that includes a 514-bed academic medical center, a Medicaid Managed Care Organization, and a comprehensive community health network known as Boston HealthNet. Her previous roles also include serving as the COO of Brigham and Women's Hospital and as a senior executive at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research.
As the former secretary of Health and Human Services under Governor Maura Healey, Walsh led initiatives to enhance healthcare quality and expand access for all residents, employing her comprehensive understanding of the sector to drive positive changes.
Significance of Her Election

As board members convene to set policies, her insights will be crucial in navigating the increasingly complex landscape of healthcare. Working on both the finance and business performance committee and the health care quality and affordability committee, she is well-positioned to influence the organization's goals in providing affordable, high-quality care.
Sarah Iselin, CEO and President of BCBSMA, expressed confidence in Walsh’s ability to strengthen partnerships with healthcare providers, emphasizing that her extensive background as a hospital CEO will contribute immensely to the organization's mission.
