BTQ Technologies Appoints Dr. Sean Kwak as Strategic Advisor

BTQ Technologies Corp., a prominent name in the quantum technology landscape, has announced the appointment of Dr. Sean Kwak as a Strategic Advisor. This strategic move aims to bolster the company's efforts in advancing global commercialization in the rapidly evolving sector of quantum technologies.

Dr. Kwak is a highly respected figure in applied quantum technology within Korea, recognized for his significant contributions to the field. In 2011, he made headlines by establishing Korea's first private quantum research laboratory at SK Telecom, the country’s largest mobile network operator. This initiative marked a crucial development in the nation’s journey towards harnessing the potential of quantum technologies.

During his tenure at SK Telecom, Dr. Kwak was instrumental in developing what has become the premier telecommunications security program, integrating quantum technology into real-world applications. In 2016, his team achieved a milestone by initiating the world's first operator-grade Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)-protected LTE network. They further extended this groundbreaking approach with quantum encryption over a vast network spanning 330 kilometers across 5G fiber routes that connect major cities including Seoul, Daejon, and Daegu.

Dr. Kwak's expertise doesn’t stop there; over the last decade, he has also contributed to the commercialization of a range of quantum products for SK Telecom, which include quantum random-number generators (QRNG) and advanced cryptographic hardware. These innovations have proven to be financially successful, generating consistent seven-figure revenues annually.

In addition to leading initiatives at SK Telecom, Dr. Kwak has an illustrious background that includes serving as Executive Vice President at ID Quantique in Switzerland. His leadership in the global quantum industry helped expand the company's reach and influence. He also contributed as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology in Korea, showcasing his dedication to advancing scientific endeavors relevant to national interests.

Currently, Dr. Kwak heads Genesis Quantum Inc., a startup in Korea aimed at commercializing QKD technologies specifically tailored for secure communications. His impactful work has earned him personal recognition from Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, as well as a commendation from the Ministry of National Defense, highlighting his contributions to enhancing the nation's cybersecurity landscape.

In his new role at BTQ Technologies, Dr. Kwak is expected to lead several critical initiatives including:
  • - Market Operations: Spearheading BTQ's operations in Korea while forming strategic partnerships with key players in the telecommunications and defense sectors.
  • - Global Representation: Acting on behalf of BTQ in various international standardization bodies, leveraging his nearly two decades of experience in committee leadership.
  • - Product Rollout: Advising on the swift deployment of BTQ’s post-quantum cryptography and quantum communication products throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

BTQ’s CEO, Olivier Roussy Newton, expressed his enthusiasm about Dr. Kwak's onboarding, noting that his extensive experience in quantum research and commercialization significantly enhances the company’s capabilities to scale and deliver cutting-edge products to the market. Dr. Kwak echoed this sentiment, expressing his eagerness to support BTQ’s commitment to real-world quantum technology applications and contribute to the company’s strategic global growth.
